By the age of 14 Celie has already concieved 2 children, whom she believes is to her own father. She was told they were given away to some local black people in town.
Celie is then married off to some widow who needs someone to look after his kids, well he pretty much needed a slave and someone to beat up on. By this time Nettie, Celie's sister comes to stay with them because their father kept coming on to her ("pig"). If that wasn't enough Celie's husband Mister tries it on with her too (men are such "pigs"), so because Nettie wont give it up, Mister kicks her off his property and tells her never to come back or he'll kill her.
Nettie is the only person in the world who loves Celie and vice versa, the only thing that would keep Nettie from Celie was death and Nettie said she would write to her everyday, but that randy "pig" was hiding all the letters from Celie.
Celie goes on to make relationships with Shug and Sofia and pretty much carries on with her abusive life whilst pining after Nettie. However Shug and Celie have built a strong relationship through the years and Shug tells Mister she's taking Celie away with her, the pig tries to put up a fight with Celie, but she's not putting up with it this time and threatens to kill him. As Celie gets into the car Mister tries to punch her, Celies turns to him and says until you do right by me everything you do gona fail everything you see gona tumble and true to her word his life turns to sh*t.
So Mister collects all the money he has saved to get Nettie from Africa to come back to America.
The final scene of how Celie and Nettie meet each other is just so touching I wouldn't even begin to explain it as I would just ruin it for you all.
The Color Purple had 11 nominations at the academy's that year and didn't win one. "Out of Africa" took it out that year and you dont hear much about that dumb movie and yes I think its dumb. Roger Ebert himself said this movie should of recieved an award.
