I only had two problems with Richard Kelly's The Box the big one being Cameron Diaz southern accent was terrible and it ruined her performance and two being the multiple plot lines that made the movie extremely confusing. Now I was able to understand most of what the movie had to offer one being how the Box worked and two the outcome of the ending witch is the best part of the whole movie because its what makes the movie so brilliant. The first half of the movie pretty much follows Richard Matheson's story Button Button but the middle and the end are all basic Richard Kelly moments. If you were not a fan of Kelly's last movie Southland Tales I don't think you will like this movie either because both movies have to many plot lines going in many different directions that collide or overlap with one another. I think the main reason I liked the movie was that most of it wasn't dull or predictable it's defiantly the kind of movie you may need to see more than once in order to understand how it all comes together. The Box is a first rate psychological thriller it gets in your head and, you want to talk about it after you see it but the movie also has parts that are beyond your understanding so your constantly searching for answers and, it may take more than one viewing to fully understand its very thick plot. Actor James Marsden gives a great performance as well as Frank Langella and both save the movie from Cameron Diaz if she had just dropped the accent she would of done a much better job. One of the things I truly loved about the movie was the photography for some reason all the NASA stuff reminded me of a Kubrick film. All in all I liked the movie it was a good puzzle thriller but I think most people are going to hate it simply because audiences today don't like movies they don't understand after the first viewing and they crave more mainstream crap. I just don't think Richard Kelly will ever be able to top his first film Donnie Darko.
