Eli is a survivor of a post-war era. While the details of this war are kept shadowy the key to understanding the events are brilliantly marked by a few key phases pulled from another the book Revelation. The directors do a great job of not spoon feeding the plot to the viewers.
As a result the viewer is left to wrestle through the sub plots alone, but given everything needed to figure out varying plot levels. There are hints dropped through out the movie pointing to the fact that Eli is not only good with a blade but is in fact blind. The brothers Hughes direct a constantly moving action packed prophet's journey. And Gary Whitta manages a slight of hand of sorts keeping the viewer in a polarizing daze.
Irony not uncommon through out the movie, Denzel's character spending more time protecting the Bible that he forgets to the theme of the book he carries. While not a perfect hero, Eli is a work in progress. He seems to evolve rapidly. Even though he is desperately trying to keep a low profile, the inward processing Eli is growing as the everything around him is effected... it seems by his very presence. While fighting bad guys and refusing to boundaries with his on screen co-star Mila, he sticks out as being different and finds that what he knows is impossible to hide.
The Book of Eli is a great movie about a great mission.
