Let me just start by saying that the two lead actors in this movie look so much like our very own Hollywood A-list. The French dude who plays the character Alex, François Cluzet looks like young Dustin Hoffman in the movies Marathon Man and Kramer Vs. Kramer. And the girl who plays the wife, if Naomi Watts and Claire Danes made love and had a baby, that baby would grow up to look like Marie-Josée Croze. Of course, Naomi and Claire can’t procreate, but the thought of them making love would pretty sweet.
Okay, out of the gutter and back to the movie. The pet peeve I have about this movie is that I think it’s a bit too long, it could’ve been trimmed a little. The running time is how it is because the movie has too many scenes that focus mostly on pondering or the characters would take a long time, dwelling in self-reflection moments or some sort.
Not until the second hour of the movie that the pace finally picks up and the race is on.
The whole thing is like a giant puzzle that begs for us to put the pieces back in place.
I like the way the camera would show the most insignificant objects, in a way, it invites to you keep guessing like Could that be a hint? Would that have anything to do with the answer?
It’s got enough surprises to keep you at the edge of your seat and waiting to see what happens next.
The movie does well in teasing you by taking you on what at first seems to be a confusing detour but then it slowly but surely reveals bits and pieces and asks you to become the detective.
It’s also like a French version of The Fugitive but with more flashbacks and no Harrison Ford, of course.
The story is about what you would do for the one you love. How far would you go protect and hide them from any threat. Once you reach the final destination, everything will make sense.
I gotta admit, it’s always tough to watch something with subtitles on, but once you get used to the idea, you’ll find that TELL NO ONE is one of the best foreign language films you’ve ever seen.
