Richard Kelly's Donnie Darko which was released in theaters in October 2001, shared similarities to Southland Tales. They both involve the end of the world, and both challenge reclining plots. But, Donnie Darko made it to the top - by critics and fans worldwide. However, this film did not. It is a let-down to Richard Kelly's films. Dwayne Johnson leads an all star cast including: Sean William Scott, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Mandy Moore, Justin Timberlake, and Christopher Lambert. Most of the film is completely out of line with the plot. When the film focuses on one of the major keywords, the entire film goes off in another direction. Set in an alternative 2006, with different 2008 presidental candidates, the movie starts up with the Iraq war, and alternative fuel, which somehow begins to circulate the speed of the Earth, soon causing time to rotate itself, and colapse, as the world melts into a total disaster. This plot doesn't sound bad, but the movie was bad. As I said before, it wanders off into a new direction. For example: Instead of talking about terrorism, the film talks about the patriot act. Plus, instead of talking about the Iraq war, the film starts to talk about a porn star (Sarah Michelle Gellar), her companion boyfriend, and a Hermosa Beach cop that has amnesia - that protrays his twin brother for an operation to stop a global breakdown. Very unrealistic. And for a comedy, the movie really didn't act funny half-the-time.

A great film. It wasn't really supposed to be a comedy. Kelly has a perfect track record so far.
