This may not be the funniest comedy movie this year but SOUL MEN will at the very least make you chuckle and entertain your musical bones. Often times the comedy is a bit on the cheap side of sex and slapstick but the incredible acting abilities of Samuel L. Jackson and the late… great Bernie Mac would make it all bearable. It’s not just for urban audiences, it’s for those of us who love a great, catchy, soul music with a bit of silliness to accompany it. You’ll have fun watching SOUL MEN

The pairing of Bernie Mac and Samuel Jackson is a good idea from the get-go. These two actors definitely have excellent comedic timing and they can deliver the jokes without coming off as trying too hard. Without sounding cheesy, they give a surprisingly natural performance, 110%, it’s as if they were actually a couple of famous soul singers from decades ago.

It’s a buddy film, best friends who can’t stand each other will have to work together once again for a comeback concert to pay respect to a deceased friend. It’s also a road trip, what better way to bring back old wound and heal them at the same time than spending a few days on the road together and facing your past. The story also throws in a disrespectful young punk who will be the reason for Samuel Jackson to bring out again his usual Samuel Jackson’s angry badass attitude.

Sharon Leal who plays his daughter in this movie has impressive vocal skills, not fairly showcased enough in her appearance in the movie Dreamgirls.

The cameo by American Pie’s MILF, Jennnifer Coolidge is always as funny as her other cameos in other comedy movies. Something about her presence and her act that can constantly make you laugh no matter what gig she’s in.

Bernie Mac’s peculiar laughter is also a trademark.

The music might be able to be enjoyed by people of all ages but for a PG-13 movie, the humor is definitely not for younger audiences.

For the record, being that this is the last movie Bernie Mac ever did before he passed away, you can feel throughout the movie the loss of a great comedian. At the end, it provides a touching, heartwarming tribute segment of interview and bloopers dedicated to the memory of Bernie Mac and also Isaac Hayes who died a day after Mac’s passing. They were the real soul men.

Didn't Isaac Hayes show up in this movie for a scene or two? I recall on "Larry King Live" that it was mention that the 3 of them were in an upcoming flick. Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was this one, cuz both Mac & Hayes died on the same weekend.

And the plot seems ironic, reuniting "for a comeback concert to pay respect to a deceased friend." R.I.P. Bernie Mac.
