Shutter: Review By Fallenlords

Shutter, was to an extent a disappointment as Horror/Thriller films go because it just wasn't that frightening. In fact it was dull and predictable all the way through.

I am not sure what this film was suppose to be overall. It tries to be a Japanese horror, but forgot the terror. It reminded me of The Ring, Japanese version, but rather than being disturbing or gripping it came across as being a little bit comical. It does appear to be based on an original Japanese film, which I haven’t seen so I can’t make a comparison.

I also cannot make my mind up about Joushua Jackson, who plays the lead as Benjamin Shaw. I liked him in The Skulls and that has been all, but in a way I don't feel its so much his fault. He just doesn't get the right parts. He was all right in this but it could have been any actor playing the part.

Rachael Taylor played Jane Shaw, again I just found her to be a little wooden. But then I cannot make up my mind if it was her fault, or just the film itself to blame. Its hard to look scared if nothing frightening is happening.

In essence the idea just wasn't that great at all. A ghostly image appearing on photographs trying to say something. Coming back and murdering people, but for what reason? Well it wasn't hard to work out the plot. You knew something had happened to this ghostly woman and it involved the main characters.

The film was disappointing and yet as with so many films, it could have been good. If just a little more thought had gone into the plot, it was just too predictable by far. Not a film I would recommend watching, in fact unless you are a die hard Joshua Jackson fan or a fan of Rachel Taylor, I would leave this one alone. It has next to nothing going for it, it wont even make you jump once. Which I have to say is a shame.
