I'm so glad I didn't see this movie in the theater. "Shutter Island," I'm sorry to say to those who loved this movie, is one of the most boring movies I have ever seen and it's probably one of the worst movies of 2010, but not THE #1 worst. When I first saw the trailer for this movie awhile back when it came out in theaters, I thought it looked really weird so I decided to wait for DVD and I saw "The Wolfman" instead; but then, after re-watching the trailer a bunch of times a couple of months later, it looks like it might be a really fun-and-enjoyable psychological thriller filled with mystery and suspense that'll leave you thinking like the other amazing movie: "The Number 23!" But I'm sorry to say, I was wrong. This movie barely has any suspense at all, it was just 2hrs-and-20mins of too much talking, the story was so messed up, it has a WHOLE lot of editing mess-ups, and the twist at the end was so predictable I actually laughed by how lame it was! I'm so glad I saw "The Wolfman" instead of this in the theater!

STORY: (This contains major spoilers so be careful!) It's set in 1954 and two U.S. marshals arrive on Shutter Island assigned to locate a woman patient who has escaped from the mental hospital for the criminally insane and is somewhere on the island with no way out. This movie barely has that plot at all. Throughout the whole movie for 2hrs-and-20mins, there's always Leo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo, who is with him somtimes, and they're just talking and talking and talking with each other or other people over this and that whatever and it didn't have any point to the story at all! I was like: "Oh, my god! When will this part end and will the movie focus on ANY plot at all?" There was also some flashbacks of Leo's past and he is seeing visions of his dead wife, but I didn't quite pay attention since I was bored throughout the whole movie! I also didn't get some of the dialogue either, and the story was so messed up I felt like falling asleep in some parts, but I just kept watching this, hoping that it might get better. But when it got to the twist at the end, a doctor (Ben Kingsley) reveals to Leo, who sneaked inside a lighthouse to find secrets and answers about the island, that everything he has seen and been through since the beginning of this film was NOT real and that HE has been locked up in the institution for two or three years living in his own fantasy world! Wow! That was so stupid! I kinda knew this movie was gonna have a twist so I predicted what was gonna happen, and it looks like I was right! The ending of this movie didn't leave me in shock at all, and I just laughed at how lame it was! As soon as the end credits started to roll, I sighed in relief and I turned the movie off immediately! And as I said before, this movie has a messed up story!

ACTING: I didn't care that much for the acting. I'm never a fan of Leo DiCaprio and his acting was mediocre in this movie, but I thought he mostly acted retarded at the end when the "twist" was revealed to him. I wonder if he'll do better in Christopher Nolan's new upcoming movie: "Inception," which I cannot wait for since that movie looks so cool! Mark Ruffalo, I don't know about him. He's mostly in dumb romantic comedies than playing serious roles. He did act serious in this movie, but I think he's more better in a stupid romantic comedy since I don't care about him that much. Ben Kingsley did a pretty good job, but I mostly liked his role in "Prince Of Persia" which I especially liked a lot better than this movie! There's also one actor in this movie I enjoyed more than all the others: Jackie Earle Haley as an inmate! His acting was excellent after his role in "Watchmen!" He was one of the few things I liked about this movie! As for the other performances, they were decent, but it was Jackie Earle Haley's acting I mostly liked!

DIRECTING: Thanks a lot for the editing mess-ups, Martin Scorsese! I hated his directing mostly because this movie has a WHOLE lot of editing mess-ups! Each and every one shot cutting to a different shot that was not supposed to happen yet just gave me a headache and I felt like wanting to find and talk sense out of Scorsese for the godawful editing! Not just the editing was a complete screw-up, but his directing to the film was boring, and I wished he'd really put some suspense in this movie and NOT let the characters keep talking too much! His directing to the movie was just terrible in my opinion!

VISUALS: The visuals were also one of the few things I liked about this movie. The scenery of Shutter Island looked cool and graphic, even the flashback scenes and visions of Leo's dead wife, but still, this movie was overall boring all the way through. "The Number 23" had cool and better graphics than this!

OVERALL: A definite skip in my opinion! This movie is barely a thriller at all! It's just a 2hr-and-20min boring-long drama with no humor and suspense and I don't understand why many people love this movie at all! Why? Do they enjoy editing screw-ups and messed-up plots that try so hard to make you think but instead makes you completely bored when there's also no suspense at all? Huh? Well, I gotta say that this movie is just boring sh*t and it does not deserve the spotlight! If you're looking for a fun-and-enjoyable psychological thriller that's full of suspense and that will make you think, go see "The Number 23!" THAT movie deserves the spotlight, not this boring piece of sh*t you supposedly call a thriller! Another thing: the reason why I gave this movie a 1.5 was because Jackie Earle Haley's acting and the pretty cool visuals were the only things I liked about this movie, but I still hate this whole film! I do not recommend it! And like I said before: when this movie was out in theaters, I'm so glad I saw "The Wolfman" instead and that's an awesome horror movie!

    I didn't care for it, but I wouldn't give it this low of a score...maybe a 3.

I really don't understand why people think the film is confusing. Sure it's weird, but by the end of the movie, it's pretty clear what the f*ck happened.

I liked the second half of the movie a lot better than the first. When Leo's character enters Ward C, that's where it finally got interesting for me. And yes, Haley's performance is the best part of the film and he's in it for probably not even five minutes.

So, overall, the movie didn't astonish me like you'd expect it, too, but it's not a 1.5 film. That's a little too harsh. It's an interesting movie, just not a great one. It lacks any emotional punch. However, I was a lil' distracted while watching the movie, so I may give it another go someday.

Good review. The first time I saw this movie I didn't like it because I didn't understand it, its one of those movies you really got to pay attention to but after a few more watches I begin to really like it. The Wolfman and The Last House on The Left were the best remakes in a long time, I thought.
