Shutter Island is a very interesting and compelling psychological film noir thriller that feels very much like a throw back to the films of Stanley Kubrick and Roman Polanski and less Scorsese. Director Martin Scorsese did direct a very crafty psychological thriller were you're not sure what is going to happen and what is real and what isn't until you see it for a second viewing. The visuals that are in the film are very dark and insanely grim that after you've watched the film you can't get them out of your head and they did serve the film very well. Leo gives one of his best performances and is absolutely amazing in the film as well as Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley and Michelle Williams. The main problem I had with the film was that it went on a little to long and it slowed the movie down especially the end witch could of been trimmed a bit other than that I think the movie was an amazing achievement and something different than Scorsese's previous thrillers(Taxi Driver and Cape Fear). The Institute in the film is down right creepy with the strange architecture and the colors of the cinematography are creepy but also amazing at the same time. The story does end unexpectedly, but by that point of the film you pretty much know what is coming next. This is the kind of movie that is made for second viewings so that you can pick up some things you may not have looked for in the first viewing. I do think that this is really the kind of film that inspires coffee house chatter after you see it so you can see other viewers P.O.V.
