Guy Ritchie has finally broken the mould and transcended the established expectations of a Sherlock Holmes adaptation. Ritchie portrays Holmes as a narcissistic, self-impressed oddball who remains level headed and intelligent while simultaneously being a reckless fool. He is held down to earth by the rational and curious Dr. Watson. Together they are the most entertaining on screen duo since Jack Sparrow and Hector Barbossa. Ritchie manages to open the way for a new generation of Sherlock Holmes fans while keeping a faithful salute to Doyle's original stories and characters present throughout the film. Combine all of this with Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Mark Strong, a great score by Hans Zimmer and greatly well considered cinematography and art direction you are left with a sensational action-adventure mystery that ranks right along the first Pirates of the Caribbean. The only real fly in the proverbial ointment was Rachel McAdams who surprisingly managed to make one of the most interesting and pivotal of characters fairly bland and uninteresting. It's a small complaint in the grand scheme of things. It's dynamic, it's new, it's witty, it's clever, it's Sherlock Homes.
