Saw: Review By Jakn
Unlike its nonsense sequels, 'Saw' is one damn sick, slick, smart, sharp and scary slasher film that is rare with its use of twisted inventiveness that makes 'Saw' a visually frightening chiller- thriller that's feels like the film plays the game on you

A man named Dr. Lawrence Gordon (Cary Elwes) and another man named Adam (Leigh Whannell) wake up chained by their legs in a trashed room that looks like it hasn't been cleaned for years with a dead guy in the middle of the floor. They try to figure out why they are in the room when the find tape players that tell them what to do if they want to live by playing the killers game. One tape tells Adam that he is in the room to die, while the other tape for Lawrence tells him to kill Adam if he wants his wife and child to life. The two begin to figure out why they're here and slowly begin to know who might have put them in the room after one of the men knew a drug attic lady who experienced the killer's game and escaped. The two men find unexpected clues, the film goes back in time at some points, find-outs are revealed more and more.
If you ask me, 'Saw' definitely has a grossly clever mind of great creativity that twitches and tweaks your nerves into being terrified and intimidated step by step as the movie moves forward. The creativity used in 'Saw' maybe twisted, gruesome, and too much for the squeamish, but also intelligent, quick, rich, and rare coming from a slasher film being knowledgeable of how to set up its characters for death, pain, traps, and torture as it brings audiences to be alarmed with shocks and suspense. A Spoiler Alert: Watching of somebody locked inside a room poisoned with body covered with flammable skin who's trying to find the companion of a lock with antidote inside while the companion on the wall with numbers everywhere carrying a candle is freighting to see, but also creatively warped.
The filmmaking in 'Saw' is well-done and the timeline with the story is easy to follow what this killer, Jigsaw, is doing. Take a look at the pig-head when you first see it, and remember that pig-head because you'll see it later on during the movie, only you'll be creeped out when you see the pig-head again. The little puppet that is shown on the camera didn't creep me out as much as seeing the pig-head in certain scenes.
This is a horror that is totally unexpected during every minute from its imaginativeness. A trouble with some horrors, slashers, and thrillers is that you can't keep yourself from thinking what's going to happen next in the film and sometimes the predictions can be right, not bringing much effect to an audience watching. 'Saw' you don't have to worry about because everything you can try to predict in 'Saw' will be wrong from how unexpected this slasher is from beginning to the end (which the ending is possibly the most unexpected and shocking scene), this is the highest class of cleverness I've ever seen in a slasher film.
'Saw' is perverse, gruesome, twisted, but also entertaining, bone-chilling, terrifying, eye-alarming, sometimes creepy, and scary as hell with its sick and disturbing, but also brilliant and unexpected creativeness that makes 'Saw' a rare slasher film that is actually scary and smart. It's easy to say that 'Saw' is the most creative, unexpected, and most clever slasher film ever made, and possibly one of the most creative and unexpected horror/thrillers I've ever seen.
'Saw' is a slasher gift based on the fact there aren't very many slasher movies that are actually good nor scary, though 'Saw' isn't really the best slasher movie I've ever seen. I'd have to say that 'Saw' is one of the best and scariest slasher movies since 'A Nightmare on Elm Street'. The best and scariest slasher movie (in my opinion) still remains to be Tope Hopper's 'The Texas Chain Saw Massacre', but anyways.
From how much I was scared by 'Saw' from its creativeness, visuals, and twists, I'm not going to bother watching to sequels to the 'Saw' franchise. Seeing some parts of the sequels just gets old after a while. You kind of want to franchise to go away. I'm not even going to watch the newest (which is also the last to the franchise) titled 'Saw 3-D'. Hopefully it is the last. I'm getting tired of these endless sequels.
I'm sure some day somebody in Hollywood will want to do a remake of 'Saw' like how most horror movies are remade these days. Then the franchise will start all over again, but that probably wouldn't happen till about after eight years...hopefully eight years. More years wouldn't bother me. Once again 'Saw' is one of the best slasher films ever made.

Actually, I thought the first SAW was a decent movie. It didn't rely nearly as much on the gore factor, and was a fresher idea at the time. Plus it had Cary Elwes, who I find hard to hate in anything.
And yes, great review, Jake :)

Grrrrr.. This is one of your best-written reviews. But I couldn't disagree more about this movie. I think it's sad that people find this stuff entertaining. Thumbs up for the good review; thumbs down for the movie.
