The bulk of the movie is about a scientist who starts breaking the rules in order to cure his father. It's a great "science run amok" movie; there are even more negative consequences of playing god by scientists after the final credits start rolling.
It's great to watch the super-intelligent ape become even more intelligent & start thinking multiple moves ahead. But Frankenstein's monster turns out not to be a monster at all. Andy Serkis in motion capture, gives an amazing silent performance as you feel compassion & sympathy for the ape that is being experimented on & mistreated by humans & even his own kind. Like other movies where the scientist's creation gets out of hand, you watch as things start to go terribly wrong until there is an exciting action sequence near the end. That is right out of a blockbuster action movie.
What could have been an awful prequel is a great movie on it's own.
