    @moviegeek: Most theaters drop films like "Saw" after a weekend. Especially at my place where horror only lasts till the following Thursday. Most films like that however remain at major cineplexes for weeks, and that's where they're making their money. Dreamworks meanwhile is really heavy on advertising this when it's still two weeks out from release. Usually TV Spots don't get underway till the Saturday before release, but they've been really heavy on it for the past couple weeks even.

    @slysnide I've never noticed that? All the Saw movies just dropped off afterwards. One-weekend wonders.

    @moviegeek: Oh I know it was a phenomenon, just figured for the third outing that the phenomenal aspects would've faded a bit more.

    @diaigma @moviegeel: I also notice that horror films released the last Friday in October tend to do well in November when the majority of their revenue is made, despite the season is already over.

    @moviegeek - you have a point. Good thing Halloween is on a Monday this year. :P

    @slysnide actual numbers:

    Opening Friday: $16,961,393
    Second Friday (Halloween day): $1,681,440

    That's a 90.1% drop :O

    @slysnide HSM was a phenomenon. No lie.

    @moviegeek: OMG. That's unbelievably high receipts, but extremely believable percentage drop.

    @slysnide HSM opened huge with $42 million and then plummeted over 80% on Halloween day. That's what I was meaning.

    I can't believe my five year old nephew watched HSM.

    @moviegeek: I'd think most kids had enough of "HSM" after the first two for the third to not make money at all. :P Plus you're not dealing with anything nearly as creative as the various films of Dreamworks, Pixar, or the Henson clan.

    @diaigma they did it to pull it further away from Happy Feet Two, The Muppets, Hugo, Arthur Christmas. But seriously? No child goes to the theater on Halloween day. Take a look at the plummet High School Musical 3 took on Halloween. This is going to really whack out the numbers they pull in.

    @moviegeek @corey - so I can have something to do before Halloween? :P

    My speculation is it'll give the film a head start for the season. Moving it to Halloween weekend is a good move, I think :P
