Directed and produced by Kimberly Reed, “Prodigal Sons” is an intensely personal documentary that follows Kimberly, a transgender woman, as she travels to her high school reunion in Montana where she hopes for reconciliation with her long-estranged adopted brother.
The theatrical release of “Prodigal Sons” follows a string of award-winning film festival screenings. Among the accolades bestowed on the film are the Thessaloniki Documentary Film Festival’s FIPRESCI prize and Special Jury Prizes for Fearless Filmmaking (at the Florida Film Festival) and Bravery in Storytelling (at the Nashville Film Festival). It also nabbed Best Documentary Jury Prizes at NewFest, New York's Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, and Copenhagen's LGBT Film Festival. The film also had an unprecedented seven sold-out screenings over four days at its Telluride debut.
The film begins as filmmaker Kimberly Reed returns home to a small town in Montana for her high school reunion where she hopes for reconciliation with her long-estranged adopted brother, Marc. Traveling the globe for over a year, the film uncovers stunning revelations, including a blood relationship with Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth, intense sibling rivalries and unforeseeable twists of plot and gender that force their family to face challenges no one could imagine. The film is held together by Kimberly’s strong, sensitive mother and features jailhouse chaplains, Montana farmers, intrigued high school classmates, and Orson Welles’ soul-mate Oja Kodar, among others.
