See, if I was the screenwriter in charge of the alternate ending, I'd have had them both going downstairs, the fight ensuing but then end it with smoke coming up the strairwell and filling the room.
This would tie in with the fire starting thread throughout the movie. It would also be nice and ambiguous, create debate and leave it in the imagination of the viewers to decide.
