The movie opens with George Clooney storming out of an office building and then rips his tie off and throws it to the ground... FREEZE... Out of Sight.

A lot is said of the opening sequences of movies. They set the pace, the tone, and lay the path the movie will follow. Here Sodebergh shows us that his movie is a throwback to all those jazzy urban riffs of the mid 70's. Saturated colors, pan-zooms, freeze frames. Sodebergh shows us that he is not just a film-maker, but also a loving fan.

The other thing the film shows us is that Clooney does fit in with all those other yuppies that fill the frame, he's uncomfortable, out of place, and flustered. How they managed to make him look so out of place in a suit and tie is a tribute to the costume and makeup department.

The movie then zips on over to George staking out a bank. With its now famous zippo scene we see him size up the angles he can use to calmy rob a nice young teller and make a cool break. But alas, George is not that cool, and gets nabbed in the parking lot cause his car won't start.

What makes this movie so good is how unpredictable it is. Nothing goes the way its supposed to and at some point, everyone in the movie has a moment of sheer suave bravua, and then complete stupidity.

Of note, Don Cheadle has got to be one of the best actors in the world, and he showcases his talent in spades in this one. I'd like to say he steals his scenes, but that just doesn't happen in this movie. It is one of the best examples of ensemble pieces made in that decade.
