Now when it comes to soppy sod romance flicks, I'm not one to portray interest unless the film grabs my interest or well I've got a date and with this well it was both. I was intrigued by the story as well i began reading the book, as well as my date wanted to see it and well i wanted to see how well Hathaway could put on the good old fine accent of the English.
One Day is a fairly basic and simple plot about two graduates that meet on graduation day and share a somewhat of a awkward and passionate encounter. In which from that day forth, they promise to meet on that specific One Day... The One Day they met one another and fell in love at first sight. But as the story formulates goes with all romance, love is never simple and easy and usually tragedy ensues and the story portrays their relationship off drama, love, sadness, truth and hope within the next 20 years within the complete runtime of this One Day surgically defined in 107 minutes.
The acting is mediocre at best, the film always focuses on one of the main characters or both of them at the same time. Which this never gives way for any other characters to shine except one, who feels like he is just there to satisfy a plot strand, kill a plot hole and create some drama. I never gave care or consideration to the characters until my favourite song kicked in, which is Robbie Williams song called Angels, then i began to visualise the characters coming to life and they began to feel real to me.
While Jim Sturgess delivers a stellar performance, whose character is the smooth TV presenter, Dexter, who ricochets up and down a crazy life style. In which he tries to maintain his marriage, which also results in the birth of his daughter, but as he goes up, he must of course sink to the depths of hell to realise what his heart truly desires.
Now on to Hathaway who somewhat follows the same lifestyle as Sturgess's character but in the complete opposition. Anna's lifestyle is not hectic or crazy but more serene and dramatic as she comes to realise the mistakes she has made. Now while many people where disappointed by Anne Hathaway's portrayal of Anne. The main reason being that Hathaway lacked the capability to maintain an English accent which was somehow muddled up to be a North Yorkshire accent, which in fairness isn't the right image create due to the avid fans of Nicholls novel. But despite the flaw what Hathaway doesn't perform well with her speech she makes up with her acting.
While the direction of One Day is fair and the telling of the story is smooth. The film lacks luster and the intentional drama that thrives the movies keep the viewer infused into the film. There are parts that are not needed within the film, while they did keep them in is beyond me. but they are somehow left into blandly enhance the character development and expand on the plot and runtime of One Day, while massive lot well worth to be kept in was trimmed from the adaptation, which is fairly predictable. The telling of the story and the edit is smooth but the story just lacks something and it feels that the characters are never fully developed to their maximum momentum. But the film does maintain the beautiful visual imagery of Nicholls novel maintain a lovely use of natural lighting.
One Day is a great but predictable romance and a decent rental for a night in with the missus, to see the versatility of Hathaway's acting. By means it's a great and simple story of two lovers destined to be together but before they can acknowledge the destinies of each other that entwines them, the hurdles enter. A great cast bursting with an odd chemistry, a typical cliche love story and a reasonable but lacking luster faithful adaptation.
