Another Christian themed movie that hit mainstream distribution. Seems like Tyler Perry opened the floodgate for this trend and I don’t mind. Production quality may be considered average and some of the dialogue and situations seem a bit too… preachy and over-bearing for what it intends on doing but overall, I think it has some good lessons especially for married couple. It’s an appropriate movie to watch after you get home from church.

When I first heard that it was directed by Bill Duke, I just had to see it. Besides the fact that the previous movies he’s directed in the past like Hoodlum and Sister Act 2, he was badass in the movie Predator. Anyways, his direction in NOT EASILY BROKEN is more like a stage play than a theatrical feel. It’s simple, it’s basics, and straight to the point. The conflicts and resolutions between the characters are what this movie depends on to get the audience to convert and say ‘Amen’ at the end of it all.

What’s drawing it back is that the movie’s runtime is too long. There’s a point in the middle of the story where it seems like everything’s going to be all right but something just has to happen again and there are way too many arguments. That method ruins the momentum, it should’ve just let itself escalate until it reaches the top point of difficulty and then resolves itself into an enlightening conclusion like what it’s always wanted. But that’s just my humble opinion.

Morris Chestnut and Taraji P. Henson make a really good on screen couple. Chestnut may not be the most talented actor around but he holds his ground as a guy who just wants to father a son but can’t seem to get the support from his wife. Taraji P. Henson who blew me away in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a revelation. I sure hope she gets recognized one of these days for her extraordinary dramatic abilities.

Like I said in the beginning of this review, NOT EASILY BROKEN has some good messages for married couple. Some of the harsh situations portrayed in this movie might scare un-married people like me to make such huge commitment but all joking aside, just like my previous favorite drama, Fireproof, it’s all about not being selfish and instead.. think of what you can do to make your partner happy and be treated the same in return.
