One of Chaplin's serious comedies, MONSIEUR VERDOUX casts the comedic legend as Henri Verdoux is a meek, mild-mannered family man in pre-World War II France, who supports himself by periodically marrying and doing away with his wealthy paramours. He is eventually caught, after failing to kill his latest (very klutzy) wife (Martha Raye), which leads to his scathing indictment of a society that honors men who make millions manufacturing deadly weapons, but executes those who kill one at a time.
