Milk: Review By TXCANY

The body of work that is MILK will surely be an Oscar contender for Best Actor, Best Screenplay, and Best Picture. The film explores the life of Harvey Milk, who has been called "the gay's Martin Luther King Jr". It is without a doubt that Milk was a leader in the movement to push civil rights to the forefront of gay and lesbians in America. Sean Penn plays Milk so convincely that I often found myself forgetting I was watching Sean Penn. The supporting cast includes fantastic performaces by Josh Brolin, Emile Hirsch, Victor Garber, Denis O'Hare and James Franco. I found it interesting that both Garber and O'Hare (two openly gay actors played straight characters while straight actors played the gay characters)

Whether you believe in what he stood for or not, the film is a powerful reminder that a single voice can make a difference. It would have been interesting to see what impact this film would have had on Prop 8 in CA had it been released prior to the election.

The film is deeply moving, historically accurate, poignant and a powerful rallying call for any group feeling oppressed to stand up and take action.
