Okay, the following is now official: Zod will be the villain of the next Superman movie, and will be played by Michael Shannon (of Revolutionary Road and Boardwalk Empire). The movie will also be titled simply as "Man of Steel." My reaction is thus: Zod is the safe choice, and more than overused, but I have no real problems if they can lay seeds for future villains such as Darkseid or Brainiac. The movie title is good, following Nolan's idea by calling the Batman sequel "The Dark Knight." Those are my first impressions, what are yours?
Yeah, just read this over at CBM.com. I really liked Terrence Stamp's Zod, however, this might be a Jack Nicholson vs Heath Ledger scenario. One can hope.
@ejk1 im not gonna lie im a bit disappointed they went with Zod as the villain. the only reason im not pissed about it is cause i know Michael Shannon is a great actor so it wont be bad. im sure there might be another villain in Man of Steel (love the title by the way) but itll probably be Lex. i was really looking forward to Metallo as a villain like that one article talked about but i doubt its going to happen now cause that would be two major villains when they can just use one of them in another movie
@pjwolsker Like I said, Zod is the safe pick. No one can really get so upset about that, but I do hope that the sequels take some chances. If Joss Whedon can make reaslistic looking demons on Angel and Buffy (ten years ago, mind you), then Snyder and co. should be able to produce a Brainiac.
@Kon-El its been done rightbefore. to me the first 2 are classics and i really enjoyed the newest one. Snyder can do it. @ejk1 agreed. Zod is one of Supermans major villains. chances are he's bound to show up in a movie like the Joker is with Batman. just curious but who do you think would make a great Brainiac. im thinking Mark Strong but he's already involved with Green Lantern so he or the studio might not want to. Mark plays excellent villains though
@pjwolsker They could just CGI Brainiac, and use a voice actor for all I care. As long as the next villain is as big or a bigger threat than Zod. See, this is my only gripe with these films. By starting with a heavy hitter, they limit what they can do going forward. Take Spider-Man as the example: first villain was Green Goblin, next was Doc Ock. Where could they possibly have gone besides Venom or Lizard? Nowhere. Sandman is not as popular, nor near as dangerous as GG and Doc Ock, which is why Raimi was forced into adding Venom, who should've been held off until #4. But that is not what happened, and now we have a reboot, which seems destined to go down the same road. Instead of using a mid-level villain to begin, like Shocker, Rhino, or Electro, the reboot went straight for the Lizard. Now, anyone less will feel weak, which means we will most likely end up with the same type of series. Now, in digressing to Superman, who can come after Zod? Brainiac, Darkseid, Doomsday, and maybe Mongul. Metallo would be a downgrade because he has a flaw--remove the kryptonite, and he shuts down. Zod doesn't have that flaw, hence my reasoning that Zod should have been held back for a sequel.
@ejk1 It is true about Metallo but with any luck perhaps they wont introduce that blasted "green pebble" until the next or even 3rd movie. If this were the case they could play up Metallo a little better as he opperates off of the only true Weakness (besides Lois Lane and terrible glasses) of Superman. But i see what your saying, its definatly a downgrade...however, Zod would be effected by that pebble as well.
Also i wanted to point out that even the mid level baddies have their moments from time to time and i for one am ready for a proper Venom or carnage story.
You know, the very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common: they don't alter their views to fit the facts; they alter the facts to fit their views.” Doctor Who
It also seems like a "safe" route by using Zod because most people (not all mind you) hold that Superman II is the best of the lot..and i am among that crowd. So even if you aren't a fan of the comic, cartoons or tv shows you still have a villain that is recognizable. However, Nolan went with Scarecrow and Raz in Batman Begins and while Raz is one of the oldest batty foes he WAS among the lesser known to those who dont have a lot of Bats experience. So using lesser characters can work. I think they want to give fans the slam bang action they have been craving for quite a while but still have a villian who is not only smart but tied to Supermans storyline very tightly.

....and able to trade punches with the big ol teddy bear....

@ejk1 dude thats exactly how i feel about the Sipderman movies!!! this is my ideal list of Spiderman villains 1: Shocker and The Kingpin 2. Green Goblin and The Chameleon 3. Electro and The Rhino 4. Venom and The Lizard 5. Doc Oc and New Goblin 6 and finish up with Carnage.. BOOM!
but back to Superman.. those villains you listed to come after Zod would be perfect i think. i tknow the fans want to see villains that havent been used before and i hope Snyder will listen to them for the sequels
Man of Steel is good. Clean and elegant imo.
