Maybe I'm partial to old-school adventure movies but I enjoyed the entire movie.
John Carter is a fighter who doesn't give up & we learn that early on in a very funny introduction. We get some more laughs when he is adapting to life on mars but it isn't over-done. There are even some sad scenes with flashbacks to his past. I thought it was a really well-done movie. He's a civil war soldier so he knows how to use a sword. During the battle scenes where john carter is slashing away I didn't feel like the movie was lacking because there wasn't blood splattering on the camera lens. Granted it was bloodier than say a Narnia movie but it wasn't a gory film. Sure people died & are impaled & beheaded but I'm glad it was pg-13. It was an adventure movie not an action movie.
The CGI was great. All of the aliens, the ships, the monsters, even the dog. The only thing that bothered me is that the Thark females did not have breasts. It was really hard to tell who was a female unless they were speaking or there was a close-up. I did like that the Helium women were warriors in an almost equal number. The ships were also great. I wish there some more scenes with the sky ships.
I never read these books but I would love for there to be a sequel. It's too bad that people will not realize that so many other movies are based on ideas that were first introduced in this story.
