'In Time' Review By K.Guy
Welcome to a world where time has become the ultimate currency. You stop aging at 25, but there's a catch: you're genetically-engineered to live only one more year, unless you can buy your way out of it. The rich "earn" decades at a time (remaining at age 25), becoming essentially immortal, while the rest beg, borrow or steal enough hours to make it through the day. When a man from the wrong side of the tracks is falsely accused of murder, he is forced to go on the run with a beautiful hostage. Living minute to minute, the duo's love becomes a powerful tool in their war against the system.
I'll start off on what I really enjoyed in the film: Basically, it was just clever. I really liked how they put a lot of details into the story and how the time-trading works. It's like those "Star Wars" movies or the complicated anime series "Dragonball" for having so much details in the info, rules, relatives, and much more. There was a lot of things that they could do with their "limits" in the world. You've seen the trailer. Just imagine a world with no money, just trading times of your life. It gets complicated. But, I still find it odd that their aging gene switches off at the age of 25 and you instantly get a glowing time limit on your arm. The only problem I have in the story, because I don't see a purpose or why it's happening. But in the situation, it's very clever and well organized. Another thing that I really liked was the concepts on the cars. See, now this is how I see the future in my mind: just a few things added that we can do. I'm glad they didn't go overboard with all the cars hovering and everywhere is chrome. In the film, there is just larger buildings, new car engines, new police lights, faster cars, new gun designs, and of course the "limits". I loved the police cars, because they're all Chargers with police lights located on the grill which is also different. Whoever made these designs deserves a good pat on the back.
The performances in the movie are great. Timberlake is good for a serious role, after all. He's not a perfect actor, but I think he's really good at his stressed and serious moments. And good lord, I'm just now noticing that was Amanda Seyfried who I think is one of the hottest actresses out there! They've done a really good job on her makeup and hair. I seriously did not notice her until now. She was really good in this movie, I really like how she can act terrified or surprised about something which is what she does best on. Everyone else done a great job, but a couple of them were not too good. They were acting as if they were on a stage play, in my perspective.
I also liked the script, it had some great quotes referring to their "limits", thank God they weren't cheesy. One of them were these gangsters to take time, of course, saying "That's a nice watch. May I try it on? I bet it would suit me.". Best line in the movie! The movie had tons of these quotes, but I never get tired of them. Lets get to the VFX: Okay, I think the visual effects in this movie were perfect for a number of things. First of all, the limits on their arm is very realistic looking like they just used invisible ink and flashed the light on there. It looks just like that. I'm also very glad they didn't do a whole bunch of CGI in the movie. Only when necessary they used it. Because, remember that miniature objects and animatronics are the ultimate effects in movies. It was also very realistic at this scene that there was this huge bank of time. It took me time to realize that it wasn't really that big. Oh, and I would like to add something I noticed. I somehow think the inspirations came from Michael Bay's "The Island" for two reasons: the concepts are very similar, and there was this shot of two people rotating 180 degrees, looking up at them.
Andrew Niccol must be a fan of him.
So, if you enjoy a great sci-fi thriller like the movies I've mentioned, you have got to see this movie! I enjoyed, had a couple flaws, but still a great movie. I'm the MovieWiz, thanks for reading.
