It is very clear why I Spit On Your Grave has such an infamous status: the movie contains a very long and extended rape scene. But for the rest it is a question to me why everyone praises this movie so damn much. I thought it was actually kinda boring.

Camille Keaton portrays her role very convincing and carries the movie if you want to put it like that. She plays a young writer who becomes the victim of a brutal rape in a idyllic, almost abandoned small-town. The act is shown in explicit detail, which is not very comfortable. However, the absence of a score really plays an important part of that uncomfortable feeling. As a viewer you feel yourself as a true voyeur. It is clearly attempted to depict this disgusting act on the most honest and uncompromising way.

Unfortunately the film does not focus on any other important aspect, which does not seem to have any part in it. Also the deepening of the characters is not flawless. We almost get nothing to know about any of the rapists as they first seem just a bunch of normal guys. This loses a lot of credibility.

Because even, as a portrayal of an atrocity I Spit On Your Grave does not work as a film. This mainly is because of one of the key characters: one of the rapists who almost looks like a retired Revenge Of The Nerds actor. Also the laughable out bad effects do not look realistic at all (remember the scene with the axe).

An extremely atmospheric, but overall a boring and meaningless film.
