As I said on the headline, 'I Love You Phillip Morris' is basically 'The Shawshank Redemption' meets 'Brüno'. The film is about a police officer named Steven Russell (Jim Carrey) married to his wife Debbie (Leslie Mann) and has a few kids. Steven retires from being a police officer moving to a different state. There is one secret that Steven never told anybody that he is close to...he's gay. He has been gay for a very long time and (like I said) hardly told anybody...that's until he gets into a car accident, goes to the hospital and tells his wife that he is gay right in front of her face. After he leaves the hospital admitting that he's gay he immediately divorces Debbie for good and live the life of homosexuality. During his time in the gay world he begins breaking laws to make money and ends up having to go to prison where he meets his new love Phillip Morris (Ewan McGregor). I didn't mind the story (nothing much wrong with it) but I wasn't as big on it as some of the other things I was big on in this film.
I was mostly big on the humor and Jim Carrey. This is film is very hilarious yet it also showed few but very rare and good points in the film while it's being funny at the same time. "Being guy is expensive!" says Jim Carrey during on scene and that is a very good point that I never thought about before. If you take a look at the gay world for a moment and see how fancy the clothing and accessories are. Haven't you ever thought to yourself "Gee! How could they afford something that expensive?", but here's the funny thing...you mostly think about the expensiveness of the clothing and etc., but you never think the expensiveness of the homosexuality world. SPOILER: That's why after Jim Carrey points that out in the script he begins to hurt himself as his character and sue. So not only that this film is very funny, but it's also humorously cleverly written from the writers of 'Bad Santa', which I will get to talking about in a minute.
Jim Carrey (as always) is very funny and brings a hysterical performance, but he also brings us one of his best performances in his carrier. I wasn't expecting his acting to be excellently fantastic. He sometimes makes you forget that he himself is playing a role of a character, like he has done in some of the other films he's starred in' my favorite (his best) 'The Truman Show'. That's how great Carrey's acting is in this film. He brings a superb performance.
This film is written and directed marvelously and hilariously from the writers of 'Bad Santa', like I said earlier, John Requa and Glenn Ficarra. For the two writing 'Bad Santa', and then writing and directing this film, they actually make a pretty good comedy team. Hopefully they keep this kind of work up.
'I Love You Phillip Morris' is certainly the best and funniest romantic/comedy of 2010, but not only that but quite possibly the funniest movie of 2010 as well along with one of the best performances of 2010 from Jim Carrey.
