The reason it's very necessary and need to see it if you love the 'Halloween' is because it shows what made, the main character of all the 'Halloween' movies (except for 'Halloween III: Season of the Witch'), Michael Myers, turn evil. In the1978 version you saw Myers as a child only kill his sister, which was very shocking, but Rob Zombie shows more to Michael's childhood at the age of ten, making the character kill more people than just his sister, much more intense, more vicious, more shocking, and very, very evil. When I say evil, I mean much more evil then the ruler of the Underworld.
In fact Rob Zombie's character of Michael Myer is probably the most evil and most brutal child character of all time. I couldn't believe want I saw from watching Myers as a child. When Michael first murders someone in the film, it is so graphic and intensely brutal that it's hard to handle. Watching Myer's murder made me go really dizzy and freak out. I couldn't handle it at first, it was too brutal and too extreme to watch that murder scene, but then my dizziness wore off after about a minute and I could handle the rest.
People may not be able to handle this, even 'Halloween' fans. Watching an evil child that may seem sweet on the outside, but truly evil and murderfull on the inside would be too much for audiences. They may not like this for that reason, but not only for that reason.
There a few unnecessary scenes in this that would make audiences hate this film. For a warning there is a rape scene, but it's not totally graphic. Now the first hour of 'Halloween' was very entertaining, but then the rest of the movie felt like as if I was watching 1978's 'Halloween' all over again, but that doesn't mean you should see this. When you watch the first hour, it seems as if it's a prequel, but after it shows how Myer's escaped from the asylum you can tell it's another remake. Still... Zombie's 'Halloween' is a must-see for all fans.
I found the first five minutes of this very hilarious because it shows more of Michael's family was and it's not the type of family that's all happy and love each other. It's more of the type that has problems everyday with every person in the house yelling at each other and swearing at each other with the baby crying to the top of its lung's and a single mother that works at a strip club with total slim drunk boyfriend living at her house hate each other. That type of family, and it was just so funny to watch the mom and the boyfriend swearing at each other in front of a baby crying till his throats soar.
That type of family, but anyways. So in Rob Zombie's 'Halloween' the story 10 year-old Michael Myers kills a school bully in the woods on Halloween day and later on Halloween night kills his sister. Then he goes to the insane asylum and meets Dr. Samuel Loomis (Malcolm McDowell), his physiatrist. In months Dr. Loomis discovers that Michael Myers is pure evil. 15 years later, Michael escapes from the asylum and that's when the rest of the film is like watching the 1978 'Halloween' all over again.
Don't stop watching 'Halloween' once Myers escapes from the asylum. It's not all bad watching the rest of the film. I'm glad that Rob Zombies made this. Watching Michael's childhood made me see how he went insane. Some people might not see what made Michael kill people. Well if you don't see how he started killing people, I may as well tell you. It was people bullying him and the fact he had no father and a drunken boyfriend living with his mom.
Even though Zombie's 'Halloween' remake has plenty of flaws, see it. Only see it if you've seen the 1978 'Halloween'. Like I said before, the biggest flaws of the film is that some scenes are too violent, too brutal, and too graphic, there are some unnecessary scenes in the film, and after an hour of the film it feels like you're watching the 1978 'Halloween' again. I will say that Rob Zombie's is not as scary as John Carpenter's 1978 'Halloween' but it does have its jaw-dropping shocks, and a few scares.

@jakn - Yeah. Michael Bay's remakes never add anything new to the film. They are always pointless. I am just happy that Rob Zombie at least made it his own movie and added stuff too the film to at least differ it from other horror remakes.

@moviemaniac66 Good that you enjoyed this remake, and yes, it is for a fact the only slasher flick out there that is actaully decent. People that didn't like this remake, and desipse it, I have to remind them and say "Hey, you should be thankful Michael Bay didn't get his damn hands on producing." As we know, he produces remakes of slasher classics.

@jakn - I do give credit to Zombie. I actually enjoyed this movie and it is the only slasheer remake i thourougly enjoy mainly because it added something new to the story and it was pretty well directed in my opinion. The childhood story was not bad, it just did not work that well for me. I did enjoy seeing Michaels childhood but seeing it the way it was thought out took away from the scariness that was the original Michael Myers. The original had no motives, he could not be reasoned, you could not get through to him. He was just a psycho who loved killing people. The new Michael Myers felt like a revenge story which is why I liked this movie less then the original. The writing and the backstory are the only main gripes I have with this movie. Everything else for me was not bad. I would give the movie a 3.5-4/5

@moviemaniac66 Thanks for the comment and your opiuon and everything. I guess I understand why the childhood thing didn't work for you, but I would just want to say if the childhood story didn't work for me, I still would give a lot of credit to Zombie. Why? Well we have never seen any of the other horror icons in their childhood; Freddy Kruger, Jason Voorhees, Leatherface. (That whole prequel to the Texas Chainsaw Massacre didn't give us a damn necessacry thing. I don't know why it was made, but anyways.) Zombie did something almost original. Taking a horror icon and showing their childhood. For a filmmaker that isn't very good as a director doing that is something that MUST be given credit. And the tragic character is what I really loved about it. It felt more 'real' and 'honest' with Zombie telling the character in that way.
Horror has become my favorite genre of movies this year and the Halloween movies (the original and remake) are my favorite ones to talk about and compare with other people.
Anyways you gotta admit. Even if you didn't buy the childhood thing, you gotta give credit to Zombie being the first one to tell a story with a character we have known, and if not, then you can at least give him credit for trying.

Nice review @jakn. I would have to disagree with you though on Michael Myers backstory being necessary. What made the original Halloween film so scary in my opinion was the fact that Michael Myers lived in what seemed to be a good home with a good family and he just snapped and killed his sister for no reason. The whole "broken home and abusive life" took away from the creepiness of the character in my opinion. When he has a story like that, he become less of a villain and more of a tragic character. In the origignal he was just a complete psycopath which was creepier in my opinion.

A gift from Rob Zombie. This is Rob Zombies best. One of the best horror remakes ever made and the most necessary horror remake ever made from its story of Micheal Myers childhood. One of the best movies of 2007. For a horror/slasher remake, its a masterpiece in its own way. I would like to thank Rob Zombie for this horror/slasher remake. This is one of my favorite horror remakes and my favorite horror/slasher remake if not a horror remake. This is a success. Rob Zombie, Thank You! This is your best. This is a good movie, not a great movie. John Carpenter's 'Halloween' in 1978 is a great movie, but for a horror remake and a horror/slasher remake and let alone a remake its a great movie.

basically they are transferring him to another prison or somthing and he literally breaks out of his restraints and takes out 6 guards then the thing with the janitor happens and the movie is virtually the same after that

I watched the unrated verson? Oh damn it. Then this movie deserves 4 out of 5 stars. I watched it at a friends house I didn't ask him if it was unrated verson. Well you may as well tell me what happens in the theatrical cut, because I hate rapes scenes in any movie.

the rape scene is in the unrated cut there is a better escape in the theatrical cut of the movie in which he escapes during a prison transfer
