For anyone who grew up watching John Carpenter films, "Planet Terror" will feel instantly familiar and give you that same childlike giddiness that you felt when first seeing films like "Escape From New York" and "Big Trouble In Little China." The pacing, the character acting, the one liners, not to mention the over the top action/violence is done perfectly and brings you back to the thrill ride of what late 70's/early 80's films captured so well. In addition, it's been a long time since I've seen such an large array of characters so well developed, where each and everyone of them is memorable in some way. Yes, you actual like the characters and as ridiculous as the situations get they remain totally believable in the world Rodriguez created. His payed homage to a great lost era in film making is nothing but successful. Planet Terror is a truly excellent film that should be recognized for it's ingenious. I also hope it's a lesson to all these director's who fill their movies with loads of oddball characters and gun's blazin' but really leave you feeling like, ok, who gives a crap. Take a film like Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels for instance.... I saw the film a number of times and to be honest I can't really recall any particular character that I liked or I found to have memorable qualities. After seeing Planet Terror just once, the whole experience was permanently imprinted on my brain. Now of course I can't stop watching it! Kudos to Robert Rodriguez! Keep em' coming baby!
