As an original take on Green Lantern, this film centers on the story of Hal Jordan's first mission as a member of the Lantern Corp.
Now, the movie starts out with the basic origin of Hal Jordan, where he's test piloting at Ferris Airport. Suddenly he is transported by a green light to the location of a Green Lantern named Abin Sur, who later bestows upon him the power of his ring as the new and first ever Human Lantern. At first the Immortal Guardians were skeptical of his abilities and the fact that he is a Homosapien. But after dealing with Sinestro ideals for a new world order with the yellow light of the emotional Spectrum, "fear", he later became one of the most talented and powerful Green Lanterns in all the galaxy.
Never being able to pick up a Green Lantern comic to dwell into Hal Jordan's origin, this movie quickly established the, how do you say: told-to-death- origin? And I mean it in a positive way. Because really, how many times can you actually tell the same story over and over again? All it needs is a physical revamp and you're golden. But, eventually, I loved this original origin story to the Emerald Knight. The only time I ever heard of GL was from a rerun episode of I guess the 80s on Boomerang and an episode from Superman with a Lantern that wasn't even Hal Jordan but Kyle Richards. So, going in after a few minutes, until other characters emerge, I began to fall in love with the Lantern Corp. The story behind the light, the battery, Oa, Kilowag. Kilowag! My god! The man's a beast of pure epicness! And then being taught by Sinestro, a high level Lantern with two faces. Later making for Hal's greatest foe, like Joker to Batman and Lex Luthor to Superman.
The Actors:
Christopher Maloni: I enjoy watching this actor on reruns and new episodes of Law & Order SVU and having him voice Hal Jordan was pretty cool.
Victor Garber: Voiced an incredible Sinestro, from green to yellow. Made him a true menace to the corps.
Tricia Helfer: All I can say is give the actress her Boodikka make-up and give her a role for the upcoming live action adaptation of Green Lantern. Her voice fit perfectly with her character. If she isn't already being played by another actress or doesn't appear at all, I highly recommend her appearance for a sequel.
Michael Madsen: Kilowag was done justice. I love the guy as an actor and his voice was well received.
The Visuals:
Hand drawn with a touch of CGI? No problem. Perfect quality on the design of all characters, Oa, the clear high res of the picture, sound and well, green. Each Lantern had a different design to their costume. Watching it in HD was another fun ride. Watching Hal Jordan embody the power of Will made him look like a Green Lantern Super Saiyan. Yes, I just made a reference to Dragonball Z. And Kilowag's fan pillow sort of referenced Brainiac. I could be wrong.
The Bad:
At an hour and fifteen minutes, it could have used like fifteen more after Hal Jordan got his ring. I think he adapted to his new power and how to use it a little too quickly. And why take out Tomar-Re? What has he done to deserve such a fait?
Overall:
Loved it, got me into the whole world of the Green Lantern Corp, which in a single word is just: AWESOME! Let's hope for the same with Ryan Reynolds and his live action feature.
