Godzilla 2000: Critic Reviews

Only a diehard fan of the long-running Japanese Godzilla series could love Godzilla 2000.

A couple of laughs at the expense of the intentionally horrible dubbing ... and amateurish acting.

It is exactly what you would expect.

Godzilla 2000 is a ton of fun, and then some.

Though it lacks the antic verve of its mid-'60s predecessors, Godzilla 2000 offers some interesting twists for connoisseurs.

A lovably amusing foray into vapid plotting, bad dubbing and men in rubber suits trashing miniature sets.

Once again, Godzilla delivers, cheese and all, in a stylistic B-movie with teeth.

Contains more laugh-out-loud moments than The Replacements and Nutty Professor II: The Klumps combined.

Godzilla 2000 ... is dubbed into English in a manner that's occasionally too jokey for its own good.

Sort of refreshing and fun to watch after a season crammed with envelope-pushing computer-generated imagery.

Take the kids. Watch Godzilla crush Japanese cars, smack Cobra helicopters and burn the mutant alien. It's a tradition and one worth passing on to another generation.

Godzilla 2000 proves that you really can go home again -- and you can also keep on trashing it.

I'd say this movie fulfills its duties.

Godzilla 2000 is yet another traditional Japanese production, weakly plotted, woodenly acted and indifferently dubbed. Yet, for all of that, there is something pleasant and familiar about this old-fashioned home-cooking approach.

We know we're in for a good time right from the start when plucky photographer Yuki says, "I've really got to get some great pictures here," while moving her lips only twice.

this is old-school Godzilla, meaning unconvincing special effects, a ridiculous plotline involving a rival monster, and lots of Japanese actors with badly overdubbed dialogue

Just nuthin' special

Godzilla 2000 doesn't have the special effects, to say nothing of plotting or characterization, to compete with most Hollywood product.

Low production values, high camp and a guy in a giant rubber reptile suit rampaging through a detailed miniature of Tokyo, knocking down buildings, kicking cars and breathing fire! Yeah, that's the stuff!

This year's most enjoyable sci-fi flick.

You have to suffer through a thick layer of shoddy production and the Godzilla Prediction Network scientists with their poorly overlaid ... use of American colloquialisms to reach the beast within.

Better-suited to a Saturday matinee.

[Godzilla] deserves better than this overripe afterthought.

Neither cheesy enough to make you laugh at it, nor good enough for you to enjoy it as a conventional action flick.

Godzilla 2000 is the one movie this summer that every parent of a child under 30 must take their kid to go see as a living example of what the joy of movies is all about.
