Funny People: Review By The CryptKeeper

Adam Sandler ruins a few scenes, but he's not bad enough to ruin the whole thing.

I hate Adam Sandler. I love Seth Rogen. I hate The 40 Year Old Virgin. I love Knocked Up. I was a little leary about seeing this. It looked like a nice drama, but it was rated for crude, sexual content. I was going "how can a drama have crude humor and still keep a serious face?" Well, something about it just worked. Yes, the film is crude and gay at points, but it's not done in a loud, disgusting manner, which still made it easy to take seriously. Adam Sandler....what a bad comedian. The guy thinks he's hot sh*t, but he's just sh*t....at humor. He can do drama extremely well. Seen Reign Over Me? If you haven't, do so. And if you have, you saw his powerful performance. In this he did well, too. But sometimes when he was being "funny", it just didn't work. But Seth Rogen, now he's funny. He doesn't even have to try, but if he says a funny line, it's funny. He's also a very good actor. In this, and in Zack and Miri Make a Porno, he had to do serious scenes. He did them well and believable.

The story isn't really a set story. It's more of an event. And you're watching this little blip of this guy's life. Adam Sandler plays George, a famous comedian. He finds out he's dying. He meets Seth Rogen who plays a comedian that's just starting out named Ira. Him and George meet, and Ira helps him through his tough time as he says bye to his family and such. It's a very good story that surprisingly has enough material to carry you through over 2 hours.

I pretty much already talked about the acting, but the film has alot of cameos. Eric Bana is in the film too. All the actors on screen have excellent and believable chemistry. Yes, even the crappy Sandler and the awesome Rogen have good chemistry.

Obviously, Judd Apatow is the director and writer. It's blatantly stated in the trailer and poster. He is a very good director and writer. I mean 40 Year Old Virgin sucked, but that's because of the random crudeness, and the retarded Steve Carell. Knocked Up was awesome. That movie had some of the best writing I've seen in a comedy. Seth Rogen added a high amount of awesomeness too. This time, Apatow has gotten off the subject of sex, and written a mature, adult, drama/comedy that has some crude humor, but not overruled by it, and not done in an immature way.

Overall, I think this is a very good movie that you should see. But this isn't for kids or immature teens. All you people on movieweb I know should like and understand it.

I love Sandler and Rogen and Bana so this movie was great for me simply for that. I really enjoyed adam doing a serious role i think he has this everyman vibe to him that makes him likable in dramatic roles. Anyway good review i agree with just about everything except the Sandler and 40 year old virgin hate lol

Very good review, Crypt... I don't know what it is, but something in your critique just gave me the slightest inclination that you really don't like Sandler... Hmm, oh well... I personally like his older stuff like Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore. They aren't comedic gems, but they take me back.

You think Sandler might get a nod? I'm starting to think he won't.
