A wonderful display of the chaos that was The Battle of Stalingrad!
I will say the story of this film was very well put together! While there was a bit of romance thrown in there, the main plot of the film was not overshadowed by it. The feud between Russian sniper Vasily Zaitsev and German sniper Major Erwin Konig leaves everyone on the edge of their seats wondering who is going to win!!! They cover a lot of major points of the battle, from the methods at which they sent the soldiers to the battlefield, the ways they inspired their men, and a real in depth look into the minds of the Russian's outlook on how to approach the war. It also gave you a brief, yet powerful look into Nazi Germany's powerful propaganda!
The film does feature a great all-star cast! Joseph Fiennes did a wonderful job! He brought power, inspiration, and great jealously out in a wonderful display of acting! He WAS that character!
Bob Hoskins was back in a very decisive manner! He played Russian commander Nikita Khrushchev and he dominated that role! He showed great power and intimidation in that role! I was afraid of being chewed out by this man!
This is one of my favorite Jude Law roles of all time! He was the lead role in this film along side Ed Harris! These two did a wonderful job of making one worry about who was going to win, who would get that edge, and how will either get out of there alive!
The directing was phenomenal! He knew exactly what to focus on! One of the big things I appreciated was his focus on the eyes of Law and Harris... Everything was dark and hidden into the foliage, except their eyes... It really pulled you into the mind of the sniper! He had an eye for the battle and knew the key areas in which to focus and really help people see and feel the utter destruction that took place there.
I think the movie started to drift away towards the end, but quickly pulled you back in, which is why I gave it 4.5 out of 5! But, it is still a wonderful film! And I highly recommend it to all!
