Edward Scissorhands: Review By Vamp

Mrs Monroe showed me where the salon's going to be. You could have a cosmetics counter. And then she showed me the back room where she took all of her clothes off.

This is probably one of my favorite Tim Burton/Johnny Depp films out there. It's a very touching, beautiful, and comical movie, and it all is done very well. It's definitely a film that will be remembered in everyone's hearts forever, and one of Johnny Depp's most memorable roles. No matter how many times I watch this movie, I never get tired of it. It's another film that can be labeled as epic, and that's exactly how I feel about it.

As always Tim Burton has a big hand in this movie, he's the Director and one of the writers. The other writer is Caroline Thompson, and what a story these two worked up! It's brought together mostly through Tim Burton's incredible imagination and eye for visuals. It's all very cool effects of his, as usual, and like always he does an excellent job with his movie, as well as working with Johnny Depp, and it proves to be another incredible movie on both of their parts.

The visuals in this movie, as with all of Tim Burton's movies, are incredible and stunning, even for such an old movie. The looks of the houses as well as the costumes and the whole general look to the film. The castle and Edward are the main masterpieces of visual delight in the film, they're incredible. Edward is a dark kind of character, but he gives off that sort of aura of a nice guy, and the castle is so extravagently constructed and so dark and creepy, but it's all done very convincingly, and it's just very cool to see. The camera angles are another thing that add alot to this film, and they really help the movie shine out in fame all the more.

The storyline of this movie is one that is so unique and at the same time touching as well as very comical. It's all blended together very nicely, and it is definitely an original movie. A lady that is a door to door salesman decides to visit the creepy castle that looms over the entire town, and there she meets a man who has scissors for hands, and she brings him home and he becomes quite the interesting member to the family as well as a generally interesting character to the entire community. It's a story that is so unique it catches your attention immediately, and just holds you to the spot. It's a very good movie, and it can be a real tear jerker too.

Johnny Depp stars in the lead and title character of this movie, Edward Scissorhands. Edward was a man that was created by an old inventor who lives in a big eeire and creepy mansion that looms over a small community. Out of loneliness Edward was created and taught to speak and taught manners, but before he could be completed fully, the old inventor passed away leaving Edward with big scissorhands. One day a kind woman stumbles into his home and their finds him. She takes him home with her, gives him new clothes, and pretty much accepts him as part of her family. He is constantly bantered by neighbors and such, and then discovers that he's got a very large talent of making garden topiaries for lawns, and then he discovers that he's a good haircutter, dogs and humans alike. He then meets Kim, the woman's daughter, and he falls in love with her. Johnny Depp definitely delivers a stunning performance in this movie, and it only adds to the superbness of the movie. He makes the character so BELIEVABLE and that's what helps to make this movie so epic.

Winona Ryder stars in this movie as Kim, the woman that Edward has fallen in love with. Kim is your basic teenager, and when she finds Edward in her bed unexpectedly one night she freaks out and is not happy with the idea, but she comes to like Edward, despite his clumsiness. She does basically ignore him alot of the time, but she doesn't hate him and she wants to do whatever is right, despite what her boyfriend, Jim says, and she constantly sticks up for Edward. Then one day Edward's help is requested to help break into someone's home, and he is caught and arrested, and she tries to get Jim to tell the truth, but he ignores her. She has to live with the fact that Edward has gotten in deep trouble with the police, and she soon realizes that she is falling in love with him. Winona Ryder, who is a good actress, does an excellent job in this movie. Her character is one that is very touching in her ways, and Winona Ryder has all that down, making the character, as well as the movie, believable.

Dianne Wiest, who is always a funny actress to see in movies, plays Peg. Peg is an Avon lady who is constantly striving to do her best in this job, and she always acts as the better person and looks for the good in people, even in a terribly bad situation. Well one day while making her unsucessful "Avon Calling" rounds, she decides to visit the creepy mansion at the top of the hill to see if there is anyone up there willing to buy any products, but when she searches the mansion she finds it to be abandoned and full of strange inventions, that is until she finds a man who has Scissors for hands, who says his name is Edward. She decides to take him home, and gives him clothes, a roof over his head, food, and basically a family. She's helpful and good to him for the entire movie. Dianne Wiest does an excellent job in this movie, her character is so nice and yet kind of funny, in just the way that she acts. She makes this character just so convincing and believable. She was really a great casting choice for this movie.

Anthony Michael Hall, whom I've only seen in The Breakfast Club, plays Kim's boyfriend Jim. Jim is your basic teenage boy, he's belligerent and a big jerk. He's also very overprotective of his girlfriend, and he does not like Edward at all because he knows that Edward is in love with Kim. So when he asks Edward to help him break into his Father's room to get stuff to sell and buy his own van, and the alarms go off and trap Edward inside he just decides to book it. He doesn't listen to Kim's protests to go back, and he threatens Edward's life if if he confesses. He's just a really mean guy, and Edward soon realizes how mean he is and develops his own hate for Brad. Anthony Michael Hall does an excellent job in this movie. He plays a really good bad guy, and in this one he makes it really convincing. He's one of those characters that you just want to strangle, but he pulls it off well and makes the movie great. He was definitely another good casting choice for this movie.

All in all this is one of the best movies of our time, and if you haven't seen it yet, then you don't have any idea WHAT you are missing. It's funny, sad, and just downright epic, and it's one of the best movies that I have ever seen, and I will never tire of it!!!!!

This is my 3rd favorite by Tim Burton.

    1) Big Fish
    2) Sleepy Hollow
    3) Edward Scissorhands

And I really liked the cameo by Vincent Price! I think that was actually his final live action film appearance, for he had lent his voice talents to other projects as well before he died in the early '90s.
