It's been a long time since I've seen Edward Scissorhands. I've always liked it, but, time has blunted its impact until tonight.

I bought a copy of it and watched it recently based on its memorial provenance...nostalgia. I was charmed enough through its first act, casting and promise. The initial cheery, bright setup is dutiful with its stylized 50's suburbia design, zeitgeist and fish out of water formula. The fantastic production design is straight out of an acidic Norman Rockwell to Brother's Grimm/Burton reverie.

The second act's acceptance of the ultimate outsider/Scissorhands's character ramp up was entertaining via the protagonist's clipping artistries and familial ingratiations.

It is the conflict and heart of the movie later on that still resonates with fans like me and anyone who has a vague recollection of this Johnny Depp/Tim Burton confection. This Frankenstein-ish creation that is incomplete physically without hands and capacity of love, becomes complete ultimately, with the love of a few that sustains him via Wynona Ryder and her accepting family.

Edward Scissorhands is a modern masterpiece and fairytale that still leaves an indelible impression almost 20 years later.
