Mel Gibson plays Thomas Craven, a detective in Boston who goes rogue cop to investigate his daughter's death. Co-starring Ray Winstone (Jedburgh) and Danny Huston (Jack Bennett), This film didn't seize to surprise me.

Reading that back of the case I read something about a cop's daughter being killed and that was almost it for me. There must be at the very least 5 films released with this exact same story; Which was why I almost writ it off. The counteracting thought to this of course was 'When was the last time I saw Mel Gibson holding a gun?'. Leading to me renting this film for the sake of criticizing it.

The experience of this movie is made new by adding in a few scenes of graphic violence and suspense. With countless gun murders and a few dramatic car scenes, Martin Campbell (director) wasn't afraid to put some horror into the mix. I took this as a good thing for the movie, to separate it from other rogue cop action-packed movies.

The acting is also something I will compliment, as Thomas Craven was something I really adjusted to admire. I expected a cop that was to tough to care about laws or to cry over his daughter's death. Mel took it to another level with this character. I can't say the same for the supporting actors however. Jack Bennet and Jedburgh were sad to put it lightly. They played the noble cop who befriends the rogue, and the mafia style guy smoking cigars who knows tings.

The story of this movie was quite dulling and slow; But the ending was something that made up for it in my eyes. There is a lot of questions unanswered until the very last moment, as well as questions you ask yourself after the secrets are revealed. As for other elements of the plot, I will note a cheesy yet poetic way to really finish the film, in the last scene which you will have to watch to find out.

The recommendations that I would make for this film are for people that can handle a lot of dialog, and a relatively slow moving plot. As well as a fair amount of suspense and a few scenes that would make you jump.

This movie surpassed my expectations and is something I will be adding to my collection at home.
