John Hughes of Breakfast Club fame wrote this YEARS ago and it's been floating around ever since. Seth Rogan and Judd Apatow took a shine to it, punched it up a bit by sort of turning it into a prequel to Superbad. It stars three dudes who kind of resemble the three cats from Superbad. I didn't notice that till later in the evening but once I did it seemed obvious. I'm a little tired right now. I don't know why I just typed that. It was rather unconscious. Funny.
Owen Wilson, the star of the movie. Duh, is pretty good. He does his laid back Owen Wilson thing. If you like that routine then you'll prolly be into it here. I don't mind him really. He's been in some pretty good flicks. Bottle Rocket, The Royal T's and uhm, some other stuff too, I guess. He does what he does and has it down pat.
The story is that Wilson is a homeless ex-vet. I had a pretend wrestler once called the ex-vet. I think that it's a funny term. Like you aren't a vet anymore. Sorry, like I said I'm tired. Anyway, Wilson is an ex-vet who gets a gig body guarding these nerdy high school kids who have big time bully problems. It's an idea that's been done before but that's ok. It's an oldie but a goody. Everyone likes to see the kids come up on their oppressors. Especially since we prolly all got some that we'd like to get all up in.
There is a fat kid, a skinny kid and a totally freaky one. Just like in Superbad. I love how Seth Rogan always puts a fat kid with curly hair in the movies that he writes. It's cool, he prolly feels like he was lucky to get a chance looking like how he looked so he wants to put someone else over like he got put. Who knows, maybe he can only write characters like himself. I just like to see the best in people sometimes.
So, the kids hire Taylor and he at first is in it for the loot but overtime, like all bad guys do in movies of this sort he comes to love them and decides to actually do what he's taking money for and help the nerds put the wicked bullies in the dirt.
He starts trailing them everywhere clandestine style. for awhile he poses as substitute teacher Dr. Illbit. That's prolly the funniest part of the whole movie. Dr. Illbit. Well, it's funny to me. Illbit sounds like someone who'd work with Dr. Octagon over at the clinic.
Listen, I gotta go to work. It's an OK movie. I don't want you to rush out and see it or anything but it does have some funny bits and is worth seeing. Especially if you like Apatow and Rogan's other flicks. Gotta keep up with em' right?
