Dark City: Review By John2347

Dark City is one of the best cult science fiction films ever made mainly because it was a missed classic. It beat the Matrix by a year and in my opinion it has better themes and more interesting and strong visuals. Im not saying its better I just think its a more interesting Sci/Fi film. Dark city is a film that deals with a lot of themes such as the human soul, fabricated societies, and an underworld that controls a whole society. The film succeeds in telling a very humanistic story that delves into the importance of memory and the cause and effect of change. The best part of the whole movie is the fact that it starts out very confusing but in the end it all makes sense and each scene along the way is just full of mind blowing visuals that help tell the complex story structure. This is a film that is hard to explain with out giving a way to much but If you're a fan of science fiction films like Blade Runner and Donnie Darko I think you will have no problem enjoying Dark City. I would also recommend that if you haven't seen this movie that you watch the Directors cut its not that the original version was bad its just that the directors cut has a better pace to the film and the original cut of the film moves to fast and is in to big of a hurry to get to the climax. This is a movie that makes sense in the end but its also a movie that inspires multiple viewings so you can catch thing and lines you may not have picked up on in its first viewing. Its a movie that is filled with great story, cool characters, and amazing visuals now the special effects are not all that great but the movie does have some great Special Effects shots.
