Cowboys & Aliens: Review By Bane. Ferguson

Not overtly amazing, but still simple laugh your arse off fun with the motley crew of Indiana and Bond with a hat and the lass from Tron.

Cowboys and Aliens follows the trend of blending genres together, though here it is a sublimely done job, but in the previous year's done to death, with steam punk Barry Seinfeld helmed Wild Wild West, and last years' Jonah Hex blending the absurd and the awful wooden genre that is Megan Fox, oh and the supernatural. The story and the follow paragraph may be sketchy due to my very tardy and lazy arse way of hating to do a synopsis, so Jake, a wanted man, awakes with no conscious memory of what has happened and why an odd contraption is welded and embedded onto his left arm, an alien device back in the days of the good old spaghetti westerns, of buckling horses. So after knocking out a trio of scroungers he heads to town, a village under the scrutinized eye of a cattle herder and all time boss man Harrison Ford (don't remember his name- as this is just high budget tom foolery) who for two reasons wants Daniel Craig's perfectly played Jake down in the ground for the extraction of his gold and for the brutishness he treated his wispy astoundingly annoying son he has raised. But not is what it seems, Olivia Wildes got no bra on, so it is a tease, and throughout you wish for a 15 rating, Harrison Ford is brooding but fantastic, Craig is a douchbag to interview, I know, and he's a great character actor, giving Jake an air, an astute persona, and a rawness.

The genius of this film is that it is a western, with thrilling segments of action, involving the aliens, and UFO spacecrafts, the old rhythms of the score, symphonized, shot with an acute studying lore of the westerns, entwining a very old fashioned science fiction twist, shots sometimes just rudimentarily ruined by going the cheap route, or being, original and using props, but the moulding of props and animatronics and CGI don't meld well, but it has scale, a dimension, a realism, in a way...its dark, gritty, but the plotline is just awful, but it's a mainstream farce that has entertainment written onto its forehead. The true heart of it is in the pacing, its fast, it's very westerly, also its got the running gag with all westerns with the hat, with added special zazz is the masterfully set action sequences, though it has limp casting, namely the bald kid who all that does is stair and have false watermarks placed on his wooden emotionless punch able face- yes the air bender- ill bend him to half.

This film though courtesy to the graphic novel, follows its own roots and lore, and having read many a review that have clearly read the graphic novel and find that the storyline has been diminished, I for one will say the graphic novel is unique, it's got real grand core main leads, but as does here, has a very grand scale that is livened by the depth fuelled lore, only briefly exchanged here, but this is a sci-fi with a kinche and panache for clichés, action, gaffs, but also its a big budget Hollywood money spinner, don't expect no different.

Jan. F has made a movie that could have all elements extracted from the sci-fi aspects and it would play off with some edits as a slicked back cool jarring piece of a western.

It's a fun film, that you don't have to keenly get into, it passes the time, it's on your edge stuff, the visuals are Masterful, with some lame practical effects and Speilbergian replica revelations, but still a thorough action/western/science fiction mesh mash full of spectacle and wonder. Not overtly amazing, but still simple laugh your arse off fun with the motley crew of Indiana and Bond with a hat and the lass from Tron.
