Produced by JJ Abrams, the film sets itself up as a giant monster movie (refferred internally as Godzilla) which is shot using home video cameras from the point of view of real people who are experiencing the attack on New York City.

Since the trailer seems to have many minute clues throughout the teaser. I also saw that there was a word on the back of a frightened bystander between the time of 1:21 to 1:22. It looks like it says Switzerland. On the Slusho website has a fish thinking of Swiss Cheese and a donkey thinking of a Blue Mitten. May they want a "Fondue Set" but.......who knows. The shadow of the monster outside looks like the Marshmellow Monster from Ghostbusters. hehe

Hey twreks1989, Cthulhu comes from the ocean,"the demon God of the Sea" originally from outer space something like 300 million years ago. Aparently Cthulhu used to rule earth, and the mythos is that his minions are going to raise him from an imprisoned sleep, to sort of wipe the earth clean of humans and start over. I'm trying to get a hold of a copy of the Lovecraft book with the short story in it to see if Ethan Haas has anything to do with it. Some of the pictures I've found of the monster are corny looking, but some of them are really cool. It's supposed to be part cephalopod part dragon. That would explain the fire ball in the trailer. With all this "viral Marketing" going if the movie does suck He'll be f*cking himself real good.

I cant imagine it being a robot, i like the Cthulu theory of the giagantic fat bodied squid thing with huge tentacles. That makes more sense. I am confused about the sign on the post. Its a Cthulhu plug sure with the "dead death" stuff but why would anyone put that up before the monster strikes. Plus does anyone know how Cthulu appears in the Mythos is it by coming out of the earth? so many questions such much excitement. This movie better not suck.

Bad Robot is JJ Abrams production company. It has been his production company long before this idea was hatched. I'm not saying that it's not a robot... but the previous comment has no merit.

Yet another plug for Cthulhu.
At the very end of the trailer, when the head of the Statue of Liberty comes to rest, there's a street sign in the right with something spray painted on the back. It looks like "Dead Death," which alludes to one of the most popular quotes from the book: "That is not dead which can eternal lie. And with strange aeons even death may die." The weird thing is that there's no paint on the post, like the back of the sign was spray painted and then hung on the post after WTF? Can anyone Photoshop this and zoom in? Perhaps it was done on purpose to obscure the words.

Just watched this trailer, looks intersting to say the least. The conjecture about this film having to do with Cthulu is a lot of speculation, but here's hoping that the speculation turns out to be true...as long as the film turns out to be a good take on the Cthulu mythos. There's not much good done to the Lovecraft writings as far as films based on his stuff, it's about time a damn good Cthulu movie was done. *Crosses mouth tentacles*

geez whey the hell do some still think the guy said "it's a lion"? and man it's really dumb to believe it's going to be a voltron/godzila/transformer flick.

I heard someone say something about the monster. At 1:22, you hear someone say "I saw it! It's a lion! It's huge!". At leasts that's what it sounds like.

Love this way they hype a movie! Well, is this a monstermovie, a movieversion of "Lost", is this HP Lovecraft based? Is it all hand-held-camera or just partly? Who knows for sure? All speculations and i love this!
Just like when they hyped ID4, they used internet and teasers. We suckers sucked it all in and started to hype the movie! They used our ass (wallet) to hype it. Hmm, is the date the name for the move? Is it something that has happened 1-18? Or just a working title? Who knows for sure? I just love this!

The first roar in the trailer is just plain creepy sounding. Very loud and low frequency. Sort of sounds like moaning and the crowd sepcualtes about what kind of animal would make such a noise. Very susp*cious

Another plug for the Cthulhu theory.
A low budget version of "Call of Cthulhu" was just screened at the Seatle film festival in June, perhaps that's where the ethanhass stuff is coming from. Eventhough it has nothing to do with JJ Abrams and Cloverfield, I think is has something to do with Cthulhu. They may be trying to piss on JJs candle or trying to steal some of the limelight.
Anyway...
More research on Cthulhu has turned up some stuff some cool stuff that is real. There are real Cthulhu cults out there, but something real cool happened in the south pacific in 1997. Called "Bloop." US Navy has a sonar net world wide used during the cold war to listen for Soviet subs (Sosus). It is now used by NOAA. They recorded a biological noise that is loudest and lowest frequency ever recorded. Said to have been made by a giagantic creature that is larger than a blue whale. Specualtion points towards a giant cephalopod of some kind. Also another experiment near the Marinas Trench (deepest part of the ocean). Researchers looking to film sharks dropped a bait box and started filming sharks, big ones. Suddenly something huge chased them all away and passed in front of their cameras, specualtions points either another giant cephalopod or something called a megalodon (a giant prehistoric shark) In the HP Lovecraft book he actually gives coordinates for the sunken city of R'yleh, where Cthulhu is said to be imprisoned. In the same area as the factual stuff. It is said Cthulhu will be released to destroy humanity so it can be rebuilt, the Ethan Haas stuff figures in here. The Cthulhu Mythos is deeply rooted in popular culture. Obviously it will be far from a book written in 1926 though, reinvented if you will. It is a very cool and extremely intriguing. As far as the power of Cthulhu goes, from outer space, came to earth about 300 million years ago (before Jurassic period) said to be as big as a mountain (part cephalopod part Dragon, and it has followers (part cephalopod part human called "The Old Ones"). It would be in effect new, because it's never really been done, and although modest by big budget movie standards $30 million is a lot of money when everything is shot by hand held camera. He has a lot of practice from the pending Star Trek movie. Anyone have anything to add or perhaps some other theories? Look some of this stuff I've mentioned up, either way, it's pretty cool fiction.

100% agree with Brannagins_Law. Low budget + mockumentary style + sci-fi disaster thriller + JJ Abrams = more drama & suspense than action that makes you as shocked, confused & terrified as the witnesses, survivors and victims in NYC on Sep 11th - nobody in the movie nor in the theater knows who and where the attacker is and why, nothing but pure terror & chaos. Would it sucked if it ends like The Soprano's - like the nature of the "attacker" is never revealed? Or how about a "Vanilla Sky" ending like it's just Rob waking up from another bad dream before going to Japan? LOL

I am a big Lost fan and that makes me really want to see this movie but makes me a little concerned about some things. In Lost there is some kind of creature and its shown it like 2 or 3 times for a couple of seconds. I hope the movie wont be like that. But Lost is really suspenseful and has a lot of twists so if the movie is like that it is gonna be really good.

i just read that free lance journalists comment and the part where he says Cthulhu was imprisoned in a giant statue. That could very well explain the flying head. Personally i think January 18 is a really long wait. Especially since all this stuff is going around the internet. I've been drawn into it to and now im just reading all the info i can find.

I think its Cthulhu. Think about it, most of us think that JJ is gonna do something new and different. the monster had to come from the water and Cthulhu is thought to be the Demon God of the Sea. No one knows what it can do or how strong it is so for all we know it could blow sh*t up and No one knows what it sounds like. If it is not Cthulhu i will be really dissapointed.

so far they say the name isn't cloverfied in this article, and they also state that it is more of a parisite
Today brings more news about that mysterious J.J. Abrams project Cloverfield, which recently unleashed a bizarre kickass trailer in front of Transformers. Here's what we know so far: The film is due out on January 18, 2008, it's produced by J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot (Lost, Alias), Paramount Pictures is distributing, and it's apparently a monster movie shot from the POV of handheld video cameras. After viewing said trailer, our own Scott Weinberg said it looks like "The Blair Witch Project meets the Godzilla remake." Well, now, AICN say they know who's directing Cloverfield (or whatever the hell it's called): Matt Reeves. Who? Well, believe it or not, but Reeves was an executive producer and writer on the TV show Felicity, and he also helped the Mark Wahlberg flick The Yards and Under Siege 2. His only big-screen directing gig to date was on The Pallbearer, which he also co-wrote.
Keep in mind that Cloverfield is not the title of this movie; I believe it's the top secret name they're using right now to hide the real title, if there is one. AICN also claims that Drew Godard (Lost, Alias, Buffy) penned the script, and that the featured monster is something called The Parasite. With all the Lost folks involved, some fans speculated that Cloverfield could be a companion piece of sorts to the show. Personally, I'm in the camp that thinks this is a totally new flick -- I just can't understand all this secrecy. What do they have to hide? Is all this hush hush just a plot to drum up internet buzz for the project, or is there another reason why no one will talk about it? Regardless, I think a monster movie told from the POV of folks running around with video cameras has the potential of being a really fun ride, so long as the damn camera doesn't shake repeatedly and give me a headache. We already know there will be a host of major Star Trek XI announcements later this month at ComicCon, so look for more Cloverfield info to be revealed at that time.

viral as in viral video style. Handheld "Blair Witch" camera work. I didn't mean virus.
It'll just be a handheld looking survival in which we don't ever really see anything, but it'll be a big enough creature that we see blurry bits and pieces. It's really smart actually. If it's done right it could be good while keeping the low budget. Blair Witch meets giant creature.

ok so lets get it straight...we've deducted itd not Godzilla...obvious...its not voltron in my opinion because it seems to be a bit more deep seeded...if you really want to gt into armageddon theories then have you ever thought along the lines of Quetzalcoatl?
And virul survival...uuuh, unless youve ever seen a virus get so pissed that it grew in astronomical proportions and attacked a city...I think thats a bit far fetched even with some of the rediculous crap Hellwood has thrown at us over the past decade.
I do like the idea of gallactus...but when it coes to comic books...JJ
