I loved Cloverfield for its new take on the monster movie. Matt Reeves (director), J.J. Abrams (producer), and Drew Goddard (writer) have utilized how technology has changed how we see and connect with the world.

The YouTube-style film is brutal in the sense that the camera is never still and conjures up memories

A lot of answers in the film go unanswered. They never tell you what the monster is or where it is from. The movie ends with just as much mystery as it all starts. We don't know for sure if Rob and Beth or the monster survive the night.

All we are left with is that it takes a monster and the U.S. Military to destroy Manhattan for Rob and Beth to learn how they really feel about each other.

Overall, I can see why some people are critical of this film. The ending is ambiguous, the camera work will give you a headache, and the characters are not flushed out.

However, its those reasons that draw me to the film even more. We catch these people right in the middle of a disaster and witness their attempt to survive not trying to tell you funny stories of when they were in high school.
