Cloverfield is less about the monster and more about how dependent our equilibrium is on constancy and normalcy (and ultimately technology). It poses the question of how we might react if that normalcy was removed. The film demonstrates this theme on a societal level in the chaos that ensues in the film, but the biggest success is how they demonstrate this effect on an individual scale in how the style of filming affects the viewer.

On a more superficial note, the movie is a classic monster mash with a twist; the action and suspense are thrilling and the monster itself looks really cool.
