The Van Gellis theme music alone would be reason enough to watch this marvelous movie. It's low-key, but if you believe that a person should be true to his/her beliefs and values, this movie presents that concept in a simple and straightforward way.

The movie is set around the 1924 Olympics held in Paris. There are two main protagonists: Liddell, a devout Scots Christian 100 meter runner, and Abrahams, a practicing Jew 200 meter runner. Liddell is a favorite to win the 100, but refuses to compete because the trials are held on Sunday, the Lord's day. Abrahams faces anti-semitism, and falls flat in his specialty.

Each overcomes adversity to win gold: Liddell in the 400 and Abrahams in the 100. This is an intellectually and emotionally satisfying movie. The good guys win, and religion is treated with an even hand.
