The film has been made into a realistic doc*mentary style, which gives the film something authentic (although the acting performances are not flawless) and also the soundtrack really gives a gloomy atmosphere throughout.
I also thought it was really comfortable to see a horror movie break through all the cliches. Black/white differences where not present: the cannibals (they are ruthless primitives), as the filmmakers (who do everything to get sensational images on tape) and even the people who recover the doc*mentary (because of their voyeuristic attitude) all come out bad. To call this criticism against society, I find lightly exaggerated. The message in Cannibal Holocaust is really too simplistic and superficial for that.
And then another thing about the infamous animal cruelty: I think it is indeed disturbing, but the comparisons that a lot of people make incorrect. Yes, I know every day animals are butchered for consumption and also animals are killed on camera in doc*mentaries, but when a real-life animal is killed on-screen in a fictional full-length feature then this is only meant for sensationalism. But really, they should have faked those scenes, instead of using real animals.
