Bedazzled: Critic Reviews

A little more script work, at the very least, should have gone into the manufacture of the black comedy Bedazzled.

Outrageous fun.

There's no real dazzle in Bedazzled, though you may be befuddled trying to figure out why anyone was compelled to make the effort.

Watchable as she may be, Hurley is not the Devil for this movie.

A comedy that is weak even by today's humble standards, and pitiful when measured against the Cook-Moore version.

By the end of the movie, I wasn't so much bedazzled as bedraggled.

Most of these sketches devolve -- with apologies to the esteemed Mr. Darwin -- into schoolyard sniggering as fast as drool runs down a chin.

Flat and lame.

The lavish scenes and gaudy effects can't compensate for the lack of genuine wit.

Funny as Fraser is, he can't eliminate those extraneous stunts and special effects, he can't turn a series of scenes into a coherent whole, and he can't steer the film away from its sappy, programmatic ending.

Charming Fraser Faustian tale with lots of sexual innuendo.

Hurley is great fun to watch, a Faustian powerhouse of curves, smoky eyes and big hair who sounds exactly like Jackie Collins doing an imitation of Madonna's pan-European accent. It's creepy, but effective.

[Whenever] Hurley disappears, and so does much of the film's energy.

Decent enough entertainment as written, though many will regret the movie's eleventh-hour detour into pieties.

As if by magic, this lowbrow film falls together and works in a charming, goofy way.

There's nothing here that's liable to set you pondering metaphysical questions, but Bedazzled is a perfectly reasonable excuse for a none-too-bright Hollywood comedy.

entertains on a very shallow level

For a comedy about heaven and hell, Bedazzled doesn't make it out of purgatory.

A slapstick morality play about the dire consequences of selling one's soul to the Devil and trying to find happiness in wealth, fame, power, or intellectual prowess.

Devilishly funny.

Curiously, the new version omits much of the material that made the first movie so memorable -- including the nuns on trampolines -- and replaces it with gags that probably seemed much funnier on paper than they are on the screen.

Endiabrado faz rir. Nao muito, mas faz.

If Fraser keeps up with performances such as these, he may have a bright future in comedy after all.

Bedazzled will make you laugh, loudly and with great frequency. With a film like this, nothing else really matters.

If only the movie had the excitement of Hurley's wardrobe.
