I really have the feeling that this upcoming sequel will gross more than the original film since it has 2 years which is enough time to grow popularity and DVD sales. And I think the same thing happened to The Terminator. What's your thought?
Without fear there cannot be courage. But when we are together, it is our enemies who should be afraid.
Only time will tell. Remember, Avatar has such a devoted group of haters (a group I will never become a part of) that will do their best to avoid giving Cameron another cent. Because of that, there's two scenarios:
1.) It won't because of that very reason. 2.) Cameron will work his sequel magic and word of mouth will spread resulting in a bigger hit.
@moviewiz001 I actually commented in an article yesterday that I believe one, if not both of the sequels will top the original, giving Cameron the #1, 2, and 3 (and possibly 4) highest grossing films of all time.
The reason why is because of the expectation level. No one really knew what to expect with the first movie in terms of what it was about. Now that people have an idea, it's going to be insane. And on top of that, it's family-friendly. So, that about tears it.
And one final thought. We haven't really experienced 3D the way we did with the first Avatar. Hollywood has been so quick to stick the 3D lunchbox label on every 3D movie that's come out, that they pretty much lost any concern for quality. By the time Avatars 2 and 3 roll around, people are going to be dying to experience the kind of 3D not seen since the original.
@Nathan-Scott You're wrong dude. According to IMDB, 15 of the top 20 grossing films of all time worldwide are sequels. These include TDK, Spider-Man 3, LOTR, Star Wars, and POTC sequels.
As for the Avatar sequel, I would say it depends on the timing. If Cameron releases the film in the summer season, then I would say no because of competition. If he releases it at the same time he did Titanic and Avatar, then chances are good because movie ticket prices are higher, and there will be no competition.
@thedude-abides See, and that's a huge part of Cameron's success. He places them in the dead of winter, where there are rarely any blockbuster type films to represent a challenge. Give the devil his due--Cameron knows how to place his films.
Well, let's see, Avatar earned nearly 750million domestically, and nearly 3billion worldwide. Avatar 2 comes in theaters 2014, that's 5 yrs after the original. Ticket prices will go up by 3 dollars, earths population will double by 2012. Plus, sequels tend to earn twice as much more too. So I'm guessing Avatar 2 will make 1billion domestically and 3.5billion worldwide.
