Based upon the biographical book The Murder of Bob Crane, Autofocus tells the story of Hogan's Heroes star Bob Crane (played by Greg Kinnear), who became obsessed with capturing his sexual exploits on tape in the years after Heroes was canceled. Accompanied by video technician Johnny Carpenter (Willem Dafoe), Crane made his way through strip joints and seedy locales galore. In 1978, the actor was found in a motel in Scottsdale, Ariz., bludgeoned to death by a camera tripod. Carpenter was tried and acquitted of Crane's murder in an eight-week trial.
