In space, no one can hear you scream...
Terrifying, horrific, disturbing, claustrophobic, intense, and scary are all words that can be used to describe the film Alien. It's has an organic and realistic gritty feel to the film that makes the movie even more frightening.
Sigourney Weaver plays the leading role of Ripley, the person who must help prevent danger of the monstrous alien from attacking the crew of Nostromo and make it out alive. Weaver gives a brilliantly and commanding performance as Ripley. Her break out role as the Lone Survivor helped ignite a blockbuster franchise as she continued Ripley's story through three other sequels.
John Hurt as Exec. Officer Kane. John Hurt gives a huge impact on his short role that is very important to the film's plot/story-line. Yaphet Kotto plays Parker, who's a wise ass throughout the movie; and so is Harry Dean Stanton. Tom Skerritt, Veronica Cartright, Ian Holm are also stand outs in acting who's each character is their own. The casting is perfect, Ridley Scott was probably thinking "let's grab seven complete strangers, put them in a tight space, throw in one hellish creature to terrorize them, and that's our movie". You know what? It works.
Know that we got our Nostromo crew out of the way, let's talk about The 8th Passenger...the alien. Like the film Jaws, the same goes for the alien: you hardly see it in the film that much. Little shots here and their, a glimpse of the creature or two. But that's the thing, what's more scarier than showing us the alien is what we "imagine" is the alien that makes this original monster so damn scary! It's a frighting beast, from it's birthing you know right from the get-go that this is something to be feared of.
Director Ridley Scott helped change the world of sci-fi genre and added a horrifying ingredient with a touch of fear and the feel of claustrophobia. Alien is an experience unlike any other seen before. The fact is, Dan O' Bannon, the films script writer claims that he "took everyone's ideas and made it into my movie" and so he did. Taking many inspirations from other sci-fi/fantasy/horror films and created his own "StarBeast". Just like O' Bannon himself and Ridley Scott, many other filmmaker's of today often try and re-create the horror of Alien. Many have failed as you'll never be able to replicate such a movie like this.
