The film definitely lacks SOMEWHAT in the story department, which is why most people tend to dislike it. With the assembly cut though, everything is fleshed out a lot better, especially the characters. There are still moments that feel slow in the film, but in the end it redeems itself.
And of course there is the mysterious egg that is aboard the Sulaco at the beginning, but if you use a bit of suspension of disbelief, its definitely more enjoyable. There are many theories one could have as to how the egg was there.
Overall, Alien 3 is a fine sequel and the last great Alien film in my opinion.

Having purchased the special 2 disc editions, I know the assembly Cut to be the superior version. Better paced, nerve numbing, and more satisfying than the theatrical version. The series went bad after this movie.
