What's tolerable about nightmares is that in reality the dreamer has full control, but what if that control is taken away and given to a sadistic supernatural serial killer hell-bent on revenge? And what if that control allows him the ability to kill you not only in your dreams but also in reality?

With "Elm Street", Wes Craven explores these questions expertly by taking the horror/slasher film to a new level of terror by setting his antagonist, Freddy Krueger, in the world of dreams with full control over that world, and the result is a terrifying journey of murder and mayhem.

Great horror films have great villains, and Craven does an excellent job developing the menacing character of the Springwood Slasher Freddy Krueger, a serial killer of children who is burned alive by their parents and whose soul returns for revenge in the dreams of their remaining children. A cool edition to the character of Freddy is his weapon of choice, a gloved hand with razors attached to the fingers. Also adding to his menace is Robert Englund, who does a fabulous job playing the flamboyantly sadistic child killer.

Putting this film in the dreamworld, is really what makes Elm Street fresh, and opens a new over-the-top canvas for Craven to splatter blood on. Elm Street is definitely a must see for horror fans.
