Baz Luhrmann ... would be better suited to capture the whimsy of this story.

Michael Hoffman's film is a lighthearted and mildly magical adaptation of A Midsummer Night's Dream that's never bad but lacks the real whimsy that it needs.

While Kevin Kline and Stanley Tucci are great as Bottom and Puck, respectively, and Calista Flockhart and Michelle Pfeiffer are pretty good as Helena and Titania, I couldn't help feeling that the characters of Oberon, Lysander, and Demitrius were miscast.

I think the style of Baz Luhrmann (who successfully and stylishly adapted Romeo and Juliet) would be better suited to capture the whimsy of this story.

But it's okay.
