"Movies don't create psychos, Movies make psychos a lot more creative!"
- THE SCREENWRITER
Having low expectations before seeing THE STEPFATHER, I honestly thought that this movie would completly suck. BUT, I was wrong. I actually very-well enjoyed this movie. THE STEPFATHER is not scary but it is thrilling and suspensful and in my opinion it's one 'killer of a thriller'. The movie also has good chemistry between all the actors plus I thought that it was actually very-well written. For a PG-13 horror flick. BUT, I thought before seeing this that this would be just another horror movie that the studio could make money off twelve and thirteen year olds. I was wrong though, I really liked this movie and I think that if your in the mood for a thrill, then you should see THE STEPFATHER. A good movie definatly, in my opinon. BUT, I definatly think that this could've been WAY better if it was rated R and not PG-13. With bloodier, more gruesome killings this could've been a instant classic, BUT since it was PG-13 it couldn't do much. With a little more gore and a little more 'R' this would've been a horror-treat! I wish that all horror movies could be rated R [the PG-13 ones usually suck], but hey, I guess some scary flicks must be PG-13. It's too bad. But, I still really liked this one! Bit I really liked how creative the killer was with after the kills. He be smart about things and cover his tracks which is why I liked the killer in this even though his kills wearn't gruesome enough for me. But, still HE was creative will covering tracks afterwards which really made it all make sense, which I liked.
ACTING:
The acting for THE STEPFATHER actually surprised me. All the actors really fit their characters and did a great job. I was shocked, honestly. The performences were great in my opinon so don't expect horrible performences from this one folks.
PLOT:
The plot of the movie may remind you of DISTURBIA, the SHIA flick, but it actually is a little different. But, the plot of the movie was kind of creative to me and I liked the idea of it but the past of the killer isn't explained and I didn't like that. I wanted to know why he was a killer but that was the only bad in the plot. Here it is:
Michael returns home to his hot girlfriend, family...and his moms new boyfriend. David, soon becoming the kids' stepfather, tries to help the family become a strong one now that Michael, returning from Military school, is home. BUT, Michael soon becomes suspicous of David and who he is and soon discovers that his soon-to-be Stepdad may be a killer. But who will belive him?
I actually enjoyed watching the character Michael discover who his new Stepfather was. I liked the movie so I have nothing to actually bash about.
DIRECTION:
I liked the direction of the moive. It was dark and it had a edgy feel to it. I honestly don't know who directed this movie but whoever he/she is, they did a great job directing this movie and I hope to see more work if I look up who you are. So, as for the direction, it was good.
VISUALS:
As I said, if it was R and it had some blood in it, the movie was be five-star awesome. If it had gruesomer kills, then yea. BUT, the movie doesn't have many visuals to wow me on the kill scenes. As for the visuals, I can't say much because there was none. This is why this movie should've been R. With blood and brutal kills, you got the PERFECT horror flick!
THE GOOD:
I really enjoyed the plot and the acting/chemistry between characters to this movie. It keeps you on the edge of your seat and it keeps you very well-entertained. The movie has good dialouge, in my opinon, and was very well written. That is some of the GOOD from THE STEPFATHER.
THE BAD:
Not much bad. Only the fact that there was no great visuals, the fact of which the killer's reason was never brought up, and the last five minutes of the movie. I didn't like how we left the characters off, it was a little dull in my opinon and just didn't fit right to the movie. The last five minutes, I wish, were made differently but they wearn't. That's all the bad and it isn't much. A 4
OVERALL:
OVERALL, a intense suspensful thriller! I really enjoyed THE STEPFATHER and I hope others do as well. This is definatly one of the better PG-13 horror flicks and I thought it would suck but it actually surprised me by making me enjoy it very much! I do recommend you to see THE STEPFATHER.
